I was interested in the history of "Fast break point": when were they first kept track off. I wanted to see if there was any information on FBP in the Sherman Douglas Era. Maybe they listed that stat back then. I chose the 1/28/89 game against Providence, where Sherman Douglas set a record with 22 assists:

No luck on the FBP. But it was an interesting box score to look at to contrast to this era. It was a 100-96 game. There were 135 shots attempted, 27 offensive rebounds, 32 turnovers and 45 free throws attempted. By the formnula that's used to determine possessions, that's a 161 possession game. Only 24 of those 135 shots were three pointers (18%) and 9 were made, ((.375) so only 27 of the 196 points scored were three points. There were 108 two point field goals attempted and 68 of them were good, (63%). I don't have "points in the paint" so i don't know how many of them were "Twlight Zone" jumpers, (between the paint and the 3 point a rc). Sherman's assists tended to be alley-oop dunks so there were probably a lot of points in the paint that night.
Sherman's line that night: 14p 5r 22a 1s 0 b= 42+ 7mfg 1mft 4to 2pf = 14- = 28 net points in 40 minutes. 4 turnovers may seem a lot but his assists to turnover ration was 22/4 = 5.5 to 1., pretty darn good.

Almost the same number of shots were attempted: 133. 60 of them were three pointers, (45%) and 21 (.350) were made. 63 of the 126 points came from treys. The two teams made 27 of the 73 two point shots, (37%). There were 44 offensive rebound, 17 turnovers and only 17 free throws attempted. That's 114 possessions. The shot clock was 45 seconds in 1989. it's now 30 seconds but there were 29 possession in the 2016 Duke game than in the 1989 Providence game.
Those are single games from different era and they may not have been typical, (there were 67 free throws attempted in the Wake Forest game). But the box scores suggest that we are taking a lot more shots from farther out and are a lot worse at making shots inside the arc than we were. We maybe better at defending them. or it might be that those FBP have kind of disappeared from the game.
