**We got a commit last February from Lucas Quinn, Class of 17. Wouldn't he also have been a frosh when he committed?

This is why people freeking out about the recruiting were off base, Syracuse is a blue chip program and name in Lacrosse, there going to get high level talent. Three big time commits this week alone.

Matt Magnan, Midfield, Fox Lane (N.Y.)/Prime Time - Syracuse

I’ve not yet seen a midfielder in the 2018 class who combines the athleticism, strength and lacrosse skills that Magnan displays. There might be more athletic players, and there might be some with better lacrosse skills – but his collection of those, along with his size and power, puts him on the shortlist of the most promising midfielders seen on the recruiting circuit this fall. He makes it look pretty easy when he makes plays, including when he trucked an opposing midfielder in the center of the turf as he cleared the ball by himself. He demonstrated range on his shot, several times dodging at an angle out toward the wings and releasing shots on the run across his body and still beating the goalie from way outside with various placement. In his first game, he dodged to his left and absolutely destroyed the top shelf on the run with a sidearm shot. He made the same move in the second half, this time bouncing the ball perfectly into the lower right from far away. In the all-star game, he grabbed the ball off the ground and ripped a shot high that looked like it hit the goalie’s stick and still had enough force to hit the net. He plays excellent defense, chucking his man with hard contact and showing great east-west movement staying up on his toes. At this point, it appears we’ve seen only a little of what Magnan can really do. But he is a force and has a great deal of potential for the next level.

Matthew Magnan, M, Fox Lane (N.Y.)
Club: Prime Time
Commitment: Syracuse
Breakdown: With a target already planted on his back after committing to Syracuse in mid-October, Magnan took on all comers and was dominant at times at the Adrenaline Fall Invitational and Philly Showcase. This is a 2018 midfield class with a ton of gunslingers and Magnan is without a doubt the most impressive with his left hand. Opponents threw everything plus the kitchen sink at the promising middie and he was still able to get his hands free with ease, catching goalies off guard with his accuracy and quick release. It will be fun to watch Magnan and fellow ‘Cuse commit Griffin Gelinas (who might be the best attackman not listed) for Prime Time over the next few years.

Since its inception a handful of years ago, Maverik Showtime – set at Western Connecticut State in Danbury (CT) – has acted as the nation’s premier individual showcase for rising lacrosse prospects in the rising sophomore and junior classes . Players work through three games a day in hopes of making the All-Star Game, which can be considered as one of the biggest honors of the summer.

This year’s event has been off the charts, featuring close to 100 Division I commits between the two age groups. Coaches and evaluators spent close to an hour coming up with this list, coming up with painstaking decisions. Without further ado, here are the four rosters:

Matt Magnan ’18, M, Fox Lane (N.Y.)
I’ve watched Magnan extensively and he’s no stranger to writeups on RR, but his game has clearly matured and is as complete as a lot of other midfielders in the rising sophomore class. He’s big for his age, carries an absolute cannon of an outside shot with either hand and glides down the alleys making key plays for his team. Due to what he’d be able to bring to a top program, I’d imagine that he’s a kid that schools probably won’t stop recruiting despite his verbal to Syracuse.

Matt Magnan led Long Island North with three unassisted goals.

“I’m proud of how we got off the mat and fought back,” said Express North coach Chris Schreiber. “I like how we played. We tried everything, but we just couldn’t get the face offs.”

Both teams advanced to the final game with semifinal wins earlier in the day. FCA defeated two-time defending champion 3d Select, 10-5, with Kelly scoring three times in that game and Liam Bateman adding two scores.

In the other semifinal, Express North defeated its fellow club squad, Long Island Express, 5-4, with Magnan notching the eventual game-winner midway through the fourth quarter.

Championship Game Summary

Matt Magnan, Midfield, Fox Lane (N.Y.)/Prime Time - Syracuse When you watch Magnan, you get the sense you might be watching one of the best players, if not the very best player, in the class. His impressive size and athleticism, combined with fluid dodging and stick skills, make him a player coaches would like to clone. He’s big, strong and looks so confident going to the rack and making plays off the dodge. Magnan’s shot is just something to see – he’s got power, accuracy, snap, and he can do it on the run. There’s a little flair to him as well – just something extra about how he plays. You can see the stick has been in his hands a lot in his lifetime. At Showtime, Magnan just lit it up with his incredible shooting against incredible talent, from just about anywhere on the field too — one the run, across his body — it didn’t matter. The release is awfully dialed in for a kid who’s got three years of high school lacrosse left. Magnan didn’t have to do any more than what he has done consistently on offense, but he made some nice plays between the lines too. He scored a goal in the All-Star contest and had numerous multi-point showings at the event.

The 2018 class is ridiculously loaded even for Syracuse standards the amount of talent there putting together is almost unfair.

Amazing that in august of 2015 the 2018 class is pretty much set and nearly all of them are high end recruits. Especially Magnan who will probably be a top 5 UA guy and the Kim twins.

Whitey,

Thanks for putting up all the updates! It sure looks like the next few years will be good years to be an SU fan.

RECRUITING RUNDOWN’S TOP 50 SOPHOMORES AND CLASS OF 2018 WATCHLIST

2. Matt Magnan, M, Fox Lane (N.Y.)
Commitment: Syracuse
Club affiliations: Prime Time
College coaches say: “He’s so dynamic, gets to the rack with almost a deceiving kind of burst and has an elite shot on the run… Magnan’s just one of those guys we all watched in the fall and said ‘Holy Jesus’ and you knew right off the bat he’s not gonna get any worse.”
Ty’s Take: Standing 6’3 or so, Magnan could probably pass for an ACC midfielder right now – several college coaches diagnosed his game as ‘college-ready’ at this early stage. The dynamic lefty has an absolute cannon from the outside but has developed his shot with his off-hand so much that he was essentially able to score at will wherever he went this summer. Using his big frame, he gets to the cage in a variety of ways and fought off even the most talented longstick middies. Most impressively, he’s seemingly complete, pitching in as a force for Prime Time between the lines and on defense. After committing to Syracuse in October, Magnan registered 55 points for Fox Lane’s varsity squad this spring
