Thursday will mark the second time we’ve played the Indiana Hoosiers in the NCAA tournament. We all remember the first time. But the players on each team don’t remember it: they weren’t born yet. (Boy, did I feel old typing that!) The idea of “rematches” in the NCAA tournament is a little silly. Even if you played a school in consecutive years in the NCAA tournament, each team would be at least somewhat different. If we were playing Ohio State rather than Indiana, the match-ups would not be quite the same as last year.

But I decided to have a little fun looking at our NCAA rematches . here is a list of teams we have played more than one time in the NCAA Tournament and what the results were. Losses are denoted with a “L”.

Connecticut 1957: 82-76, 1979: 89-81
North Carolina 1957: 58-67L, 1975: 78-76, 1987: 79-75
Duke 1966: 81-91L, 1998: 67-80L
Pennsylvania 1973: 69-68, 1979: 76-84L (the 1973 game was a consolation game)
Kansas State 1975L 95-87, 2012: 75-59
Kentucky 1975: 79-95L, 1996: 67-76L. 2000: 52-50
W. Kentucky 1978: 86-87L 1987: 104-86
Virginia 1983: 55-63L, 1990: 63-61
Missouri 1989: 83-80, 1994: 88-98L
Hawaii 1994: 92-78, 2001: 79-69
Kansas 1996: 60-57, 2001: 58-87L, 2003: 81-78
Oklahoma St. 1999: 61-69L, 2003: 68-56
Oklahoma 2003: 63-47, 2009: 71-84L
Vermont 2005: 57-60L, 2010: 79-56

We’ve beaten Connecticut, Kansas State and Hawaii both times we played each. We’ve been swept by Duke. The other ten opponents we’ve both beaten and lost to. Six of those teams we lost to first and then beat: We’ve gained “revenge” on North Carolina twice. Pennsylvania, Missouri and Oklahoma gained “revenge” on us. Kansas beat us badly in between two famous SU wins, (they outscored us by 23 overall in the three games.

For what it’s worth, it appears that if two teams meet more than once in the NCAAs, the chances are they will split their games and that if your team lost the first one, they’ve got a good shot to win the second. But it will take more than that to beat Indiana.
