19 Members of the Orange Qualify for NCAA Regionals
Seven make the top-10 of qualifying seed times
Nineteen members of the Syracuse track and field teams will continue their postseason runs at this weekend's NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Florida, including seven student-athletes who qualified in the top-10 of their respective events.
Syracuse has 11 competitors representing the No. 21-ranked men's team and eight women in the NCAA Regional field, which is one of two NCAA Championships preliminary events where runners compete to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon June 10-13.
Martin Hehir is Syracuse's top-qualifier, as the No. 1 seeded runner in the 10,000-meters. Hehir, who posted his seed time of 28:27.70, which is a school record, at the Stanford Invitational earlier this season, competed in the 5,000-meters at the ACC Championships last weekend, where he took silver.
An All-American in cross country and indoor track, Hehir's 5,000-meter time was also below the NCAA regional qualifying standards, but he will only be competing in the 10k at this weekend's prelims.
Syracuse has the majority of the front-runners in the 10k seedings, with ACC runner-up Dan Lennon seeded third (28:46.21) and Reed Kamyszek seeded fourth (28:49.53), fresh off his fifth-place finish at the ACC Championships.
Philo Germano (29th), Kevyn Hoyos (36th), and Max Straneva (43rd) are also in the 10,000-meter field.
Margo Malone will lead a group of four women who will represent the Orange in the women's 10k. After shattering the school record by nearly 30 seconds at the Stanford Invitational, Malone cruised to an ACC Championship last weekend in the event.
Her Stanford Invite time of 32:29.89 is good for the second-best seed time, just under one second behind Tennessee's Chelsea Blaase. No other competitor has a seed time within 37 seconds of the duo.
Maura Linde (15th), Jessie Peterson (16th) and Shaylyn Tuite (35th) each posted qualifying seed times in the event as well this season.
Freshman standout Justyn Knight is another member of the Orange who reached the qualifying marks in two separate events. The ACC Champion in the 1500-meters, Knight will be competing in the 5,000-meters – an event he set the school record in at the Payton Jordan Invitational previously this year.
Knight is the second qualifier in the event, with a seed time of 13:34.86. He's joined in the 5k field by Colin Bennie, who posted the No. 10 seed time (13:53.93).
The hurdling tandem of Donald Pollitt and Freddie Crittenden are in the NCAA Regional field as well, with Pollitt seeded seventh (0.13 seconds off the top-seed's time) and Crittenden right behind with the 16th-best seed time.
Shaina Harrison, the ACC Indoor Champion in the 60-meters and runner-up in the 100-meters at the outdoor championships, is seeded 11th in the 100-meter dash. She posted her seed time of 11.36 at last weekend's ACC Championships.
Rebecca Robinson joined the 400-meter field thanks to her qualifying time at the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational on the season's opening weekend. She's seeded 42nd in the event.
Joel Hubbard will represent the Orange in the 1,500-meters. Hubbard posted a seed time of 3:44.75 at the Virginia Challenge.
Sydney Leiher will also make the trip to Jacksonville, she'll be competing in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
The lone Syracuse jumper in the field will be Regine Hunter, who will be competing in the triple jump.
The meet will get underway on Thursday, and run through Saturday at the University of North Florida. Syracuse will get an opportunity to prove itself early, with 10-members of the team competing in the first final of the meet – the 10,000-meters on Thursday night.
