I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.
I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

We attempted 38 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 25 free throws and were fouled 16 times = 3.42, 2.66, 1.08
They attempted 32 two point shots, scored 28 points in the paint, attempted 12 free throws and were fouled 15 times = 3.20, 3.33, 0.73
Comments:
- Trevor Cooney went out in a blaze off glory with probably his best career game, excepting when he went off against Notre Dame a couple of years ago.
- Michael Gbinije did the opposite, missing 13 of 18 shots,, having only 3 rebounds, 2 assists and no steals while committing four turnovers and fouling out.
- DaJuan Coleman quietly had a productive game with 5 points, 4 rebounds 2 blocks and a steal in 19 minutes. I recall two years ago, it was Gbinije who quietly had a good game in a loss after with 5 points, 4 rebounds 2 blocks and a steal in 19 minutes.
- Richardson ended his season with a fine game: 17 points, 5 rebounds, and assist and a steal. It wasn’t enough but he held up his end. Gbinije’s poor finale, Roberson scoring 2 points, (despite his 9 rebounds- 6 on the offensive boards, Tyler Lydon going 3 for 9, ) and Frank Howard sorry 5 minutes, where he did not thing positive but missed two field goals, two free throws, had a turnover and committed a foul, were the problems.
- We held our own on the boards for much of the game but faded badly down the stretch. (20-22 in the first half, 9-21 in the second).
- Nothing predicts victory better than two point field goal percentage and they out-shot us 46%-64%. When the other team is shooting the ball better and getting better when they miss, they will be hard to beat.
- 4 for 13 free throws isn’t going to produce any upsets. One was the front end of a one and one so that’s really 10 points we left on the line in a 16 point game. With all our other problems, we could have stayed in it if we’d made our free throws.
- We gave up 50 points in the paint because we allowed so much easy penetration at the top of the zone. Once their guards got the ball to their multi-talented bigs, we were toast because we couldn’t guard then and if we tried, they were great at passing the ball to each other.
- Passing- there’s a concept. We had 5 assists because so many of our shots are either three point attempts or banzi charges to the basket. We run pick and rolls that are just picks. Naismith’s original concept was a grid with a player form each team in each box. They were supposed to battle for possession of the ball and, when won, pass it to a teammate in another box until the ball got close enough to the basket to shot it. That’s a more advanced concept than our offense.
- Still, we were out-scored only 45-46 in initial offensive sets. We were -3 in second chance points, -3 in points off turnovers and -8 in fast break points. Remember when we knew how to run a fast break? Possession of the ball is not a neutral thing. It’s a scoring opportunity.
- We only had 10 turnovers but 7 came in the first half and either killed a golden scoring opportunity for us or presented the Tar Heels with one, starting with our very first possession. It was a sign we just didn’t have it for this one.
- They started out 0 for 12 from the arc and we may have had something to do with that. Paige and Berry had been hot from outside and covering them may have been the reason why they got the ball inside so easily. Then we adjusted to stop the inside scoring and Paige and Pinson made 4 treys down the stretch that prevented any comeback. The Heels just have so many weapons you can’t cover all of them, no matter how wonderful your defense is supposed to be.
- There were a handful of questionable calls or non-calls but this is not a game that will be remembered for the officiating: we just played a better team and didn’t play well enough to give us a chance to knock them off. This is the deep end of the pool and we needed to play over our heads and we didn’t.
