I will again be doing a report after each game this season and a summary report at the end of each month. (I’ve eliminated some stats from previous years to streamline this post.)
Net Points
(points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks minus missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and personal fouls)
(season totals double-checked from Cuse.com stats on 3/1)
Joe Girard +22NP in 37 minutes = +85NP in 279 minutes = +12.2NP/40 for season
Buddy Boeheim +20NP in 37 minutes = +58NP in 206 minutes = +11.3NP/40 for season
Marek Dolezaj +13NP in 40 minutes = +141NP in 319 minutes = +17.7NP/40 for season
Quincy Guerrier +10NP in 30 minutes = +165NP in 286 minutes = +23.1NP/40 for season
Alan Griffin +7NP in 33 minutes = +137NP in 297 minutes = +18.5NP/40 for season
Robert Braswell +6NP in 17 minutes = +8NP in 78 minutes = +4.1NP/40 for season
Kadary Richmond +1NP in 6 minutes = +97NP in 207 minutes = +18.7NP/40 for season
DNP coach’s decision
Frank Anselem 0NP in 0 minutes = +5NP in 26 minutes = +7.7NP/40 for season

Offensive Dude of the Game, (O-Dog)
(Points plus assists)
Joe Girard 18 points and 8 assists = 26
Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goal and free throw attempts)
Joe Girard 18 points – 5mfg – 1mft = +12
Scoring Efficiency
(Percentage of points scored divided by points they would have scored if they made every shot- minimum 10 possible points)
Marek Dolezaj 11 points of 18 = 61.1%
My Man
(Who played the most minutes?)
Marek Dolezaj 40 minutes
TEAM STATS
Possession
Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 12 of our 37 misses = 32.4%
They rebounded 7 of their 33 misses = 21.2%
Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 11 points on 12 O-Rebs = 0.917 points/O-Reb
They got 7 points on 7 O-Rebs = 1.000 points/O-Reb
Unforced Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 9 turnovers – 4 steals = 5 unforced
They had 12 turnovers – 7 steals = 5 unforced
Points per Takeover
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 14 points from 12 takeovers = 1.167 points/takeaway
They had 11 points from 9 takeovers = 1.222 points/takeaway
Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeover: [Second Chance Points+ Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 25 points in 24 unsettled situations = 1.042 points
They had 18 points in 16 unsettled situations = 1.125 points
Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 38 + 12 = 50
They had 32 + 9 = 41
Hustle Stats
One of the radio sponsors gives an award to the team that had the most “hustle stats”, which they define as rebounds + blocks + steals. I decided to keep track of that, too:
We had 38 + 3 + 7 = 58
They had 32 + 6 + 4 = 42
Scoring
Shooting
(Shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 18 for 40 on twos, (45.0%), 9 for 22 on threes (40.9%) and 11 for 14 on frees (78.6%)
They were 13 for 23 on twos, (56.5%), 11 for 32 on threes (34.4%) and 10 for 13 on frees (76.9%)
Combined percentages were: 450 + 409 + 786 = 1,645 vs. 565 + 344 + 769 = 1,678 = -33
Points
(PIP= points in the paint, “The Inner Sanctum”
POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP -free throws made
OL= points from “The Outer Limits” (three point shots)
TZ= “Twilight Zone”, which is POP – TREY, (two point jumpers from outside the paint)
FBP = fast break points
POTO= points off turnovers
We had 20 PIP, 43 POP, 27 OL, 16 TZ, 11 POTO, 14 FBP
They had 20 PIP, 39 POP, 33 OL, 6 TZ, 14 POTO, 11 FBP
Fast Break Percentage
(FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)
We scored 11 FBP in 35 opportunities (31.4%)
They scored 14 FBP in 36 opportunities (38.9%)
First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 38 FCP and 11 SCP
They had 41 FCP and 9 SCP
Starters/Bench
(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 71 points and our bench scored 3 points.
Their starters scored 55 points and their bench scored 14 points.
Assists
(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 18 of our 22 field goals = 81.8%
They assisted 13 of their 23 field goals = 56.5%
Team Offensive Possession Efficiency
(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 74 points in 66 possessions = 1.045 points/ possession
They scored 69 points in 66 possessions = 1.121 points/possession
It was a 132 possession game.
If we just use FGA + (47.5% FTA) and thus count an offensive rebound as an additional possession and a turnover as a lost possession:
We scored 74 points in 69 possessions = 1.072 points/ possession
They scored 69 points in 61 possessions = 1.131 points/possession
Team Shooting Efficiency
(Points minus missed field goals and free throws)
We scored 74 points, missed 35 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +36
They scored 69 points, missed 31 field goals and missed 3 free throws = net +35
(Points scored divided by potential points scored if we’d made every shot)
We scored 74 on 40 two point attempts, 22 three point attempts and 14 free throw attempts = 60 of a possible 160 points = 46.25% of possible points scored.
They scored 69 on 23 two point attempts, 32 three point attempts and 13 free throw attempts = 63 of a possible 155 points = 44.5% of possible points scored.
Fouls
(Most fouls are called on two point shot attempts.)
We attempted 40 two point shots and were fouled 15 times = 2.67
They attempted 23 two point shots and were fouled 12 times = 1.92
At this rate, if They’d taken 40 two point shots, they’d have been fouled 21 times.
Comments
- This was the first time a guard has led us in net points this season, (Joe Girard with 22). That’s hard to do. It had been Griffin, Guerrier and Dolezaj – and probably will continue to be.
- Against Pittsburgh we attempted 22 two point shots and 38 three point shots. In this game it virtually the reverse. We attempted 40 two pointers and 22 three pointers.
- In both games we shot about the same on two point shots: 45.0% and 45.4%, neither of which is very good, (we need to be above 50%). Against Pitt we gave up 43.2% and lost. Against G-town, we gave up 56.5% and won. The Panthers attempted 37 two pointers to 23 for the Hoyas.
- We were even in the Inner Sanctum, (the paint: 20-20), -6 in the Outer Limits, (9 threes to 11), and +1 at the line, (11-10). Where did we win this game? In the Twilight Zone (between the paint and the arc: 16-6).
- But possession is 9/10ths (or something like that) of basketball. Pitt 49 rebounds and 13 takeovers for 62 manufactured possessions. We got 33 + 16 = 49. They also had 21 second chance points and 10 more off turnovers, a total of 31. We had 3 + 13 = 16. The Hoyas had 41 MP to our 50 and 16 points off them to our 24.
