I’ve added so many things to my post-game “Net Points” posts over the years that it’s become a very long post to read and a longer one to do. I’ve decided to have separate posts for the numbers for a particular game and for the cumulative season totals. It’s the later that takes most of the time and lengthens the post so much. There was too much verbiage and too many numbers.

I’m still going to figure the season totals but I’ll post them at three different stages of the season: after the pre-conference schedule, after the conference schedule and after the post season. In the meantime, I’ll go with this stream-lined version of “Net Points, etc.” after each game, with numbers and commentary only for that game. That should make it both quicker to do and more digestible.

Team Stats:

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 15 of our 40 misses = 37.5%
They rebounded 12 of their 30 misses = 40.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 16 points on 15 O-Rebs = 1.07 points
They got 8 points on 12 O-Rebs = 0.67 points

Turnovers
(Total turnovers – steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 9 turnovers – 4 steals = 5 unforced
They had 17 turnovers - 9 steals = 8 unforced

Points from Turnovers
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 14 points from 17 turnovers = 0.82 points
They had 9 points from 9 turnovers = 1.00 points

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 33 + 17 = 50
They had 37 + 9 = 46

SCORING

Shooting
(shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)
We were 17 for 46 on twos, (.370), 5 of 15 on threes (.333) and 14 for16 on frees (.875)
They were 16 for34 on twos (.471), 8 for 21 on threes (.381) and 4 for 5 on frees (.800)

Points
(PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points)
We had 26 PIP, 23 POP, 15 TREY, 8 TZ, 6 FBP
They had 24 PIP, 32 POP, 24 TREY, 8 TZ, 2 FBP

First Chance/Second Chance
(FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made, courtesy of Pat. SCP is second chance points.)
We had 27 FCP and 16 SCP
They had 46 FCP and 8 SCP

Starters/Bench

(Total points – bench points = starters points)
Our starters scored 54 points and our bench scored 9 points
Their starters scored 58 points and their bench scored 2 points

Assists

(The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)
We assisted 9 of our 22 field goals, 40.9%
They assisted 18 of their 24 field goals 75.0%

Team Offensive Efficiency

(Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)
We scored 63 points in 63 possessions = 1.00 points/possession
They scored 60 points in 62 possessions = 0.97 points/ possession
It was a 125 possession game

Breakdown by Quarters

(Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)
10-21, 18-8, 16-17, 19-14

FOULS

(Two point shots, points in paint and free throws attempted per times fouled.)
We attempted 46 two point shots, scored 26 points in the paint, attempted 16 free throws and were fouled 14 times = 3.29, 1.86, 1.14
They attempted 34 two point shots, scored 24 points in the paint, attempted 5 free throws and were fouled 12 times = 2.83, 2.00, 0.42

Comments:

- Gbinije, Cooney and Lydon made big plays at the end of the game but without Roberson’s aggressive rebounding and throwing his body around against Sabonis and Wiltjer inside, those plays don’t win the game.

- Cooney leading in offensive efficiency is quite a switch, It’s only the second time all year he did that. Again, he’s more of a scorer than a shooter. He can hit threes but he can also drive and could hit pull-ups or pass off if he put his mind to it. His whole problem has been that he was typed as a three point gunner and he’s less than that and more than that at the same time.

- “Manufactured possessions” is classic zone: lose the rebounding battle but make up for it by forcing turnovers. But we wouldn’t have won without some determined offensive rebounds down the stretch. That shows up in our “effective offensive rebounding.

- We were the smaller team but had 12 more two point field goal attempts and 11 more free throw attempts. Our percentage on the two point attempts was low but we still got one more basket from there due to all the attempts and scored 10 more points from the foul line. It offset our being -9 in points form the arc.

- We got killed on our initial sets, 27-46 but won anyway because we got to the line and we got those second chance points.

- Assists again meant nothing. They had twice as many of them and almost twice the percentage because they shot more jumps shots than we did. But you rarely win on jump shots.

- Both teams were aware of the “Twilight Zone”. They used the whole court, not just the paint and the arc.

- I wish we could get off to better starts in these games. We’ve likely got nothing but #1 seeds ahead of us and we can’t afford to go down 10-21 to them.

- It was the Sweet 16 and both teams rode their best guys: there were just 11 bench points in the game and we had 9 of them.
