Team Stats:

POSSESSION

Rebounding
(Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)
We rebounded 6 of our 32 misses = 18.8%
They rebounded 18 of their 36 misses = 50.0%

Effective Offensive Rebounding
(Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)
We got 9 points on 6 O-Rebs =1.50 points
They got 20 points on 18 O-Rebs = 1.11 points

Turnovers
(Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)
We had 13 turnovers – 6 steals = 7 unforced
They had 9 turnovers – 8 steals = 1 unforced

Points per Takeaway
(Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)
We had 8 points from 9 takeaways = 0.89 points
They had 26 points from 13 takeaways =2.00 points

Unsettled Situations
(Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)
We had 17 points in 15 unsettled situations = 1.13
They had 46 points in 31 unsettled situations = 1.48

Manufactured Possessions
(One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)
We had 24 + 9 = 33
They had 44 + 13 = 57

Comments:

- In our last game Taurean Thompson began the scoring with a jumper at 19:41. In this game he began the scoring with a jumper at 19:37. He’s our go-to-guy to open the game.

- The definition of getting killed on the boards: They rebounded 50% of their misses. We rebounded 19% of ours.

- We actually did a better job of converting offensive rebounds into points, (9 from 6 O-rebs vs. 20 from 18). They just had a lot more opportunities.

- The Tar Heels used that sticky stuff to hold onto the ball: they had only one turnover that wasn’t a Syracuse steal. That’s the lowest number of the season by Su or any opponent, easily.

- The Heel’s productivity off of our turnovers, (26 points from 13 turnovers), which JB questioned in his press conference was the most by any SU opponent this year but not unprecedented: we were credited with 31 points off 13 Holy Cross turnovers, for 2.38 per TO.

- This game wasn’t about shooting. It was about possession. We manufactured 33 of them. They manufactured 57.

- UNC’s 46 points in the paint were the most we’ve given up all year by 8.

- We actually out-scored them in our initial sets, (“First Chance Points”), 46-45. It’s the fifth straight game we’ve done that.

- We had 42 point s outside the paint to 30. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overcome their advantage in the paint.

- North Carolina attempted 9 more two point shots and scored 26 more points in the paint than we did yet the fouls were equal, so I don’t think you could say we were disadvantaged by the refs, even though it was an ACC road game. (Typically teams that go to the basket to score more will draw more fouls. )
