@cvock: Tremendous pickup for Syracuse tonight: Nick Mellen, D, West Genesee '15 has committed to the Orange. One of the very best in the class.

@ILPreps: Mellen was ranked No. 22 in the Young Gun Sophomore Watchlist in October of 2012. He also strongly considered Cornell during the process.

Comparing Mellen to Z Man!......does that mean Mellen will wear orange Converse all star high tops????

Great pickup, this kid will be a top 10 recruit by the time hes a Senior. Syracuse has really picked it up the last few weeks for 2015 class. As crazy as it sounds we probably have to start looking at the 2016 kids soon, JHU allready has like 6 commits for 2016, unreal.

We already have a head start on the 2031 class:

Congrats to @ryanpowell22 on the birth of his son Kingston. Great name.

9. Nick Mellen, LSM/D, West Genesee (N.Y.)
Affiliation: N/A
Commitment: Syracuse

Arguably the best defenseman to come out of upstate since Jack Reilly in 2010, Mellen is the perfect blend of strength, speed and cover ability. He’s an animal off of the wing, chipping in during transition play or when the ball is on the ground. With his well-roundedness down low, he can cover elite attackmen with all sorts of different skill sets – and dominate them. Likely too talented to keep off the field at ‘Cuse.

I was lucky enough to see Nick play for Upstate at the Under Armour games, he is great mix of solid gritty tough defence man who loves to hit and also a finess type handler, great on ground balls and can shut down the best offensive threat that is very rare, should be a great one up on the hill coming from the dynasty that is West Genny!

Nick and his father where staying in the same hotel in Towson and We ran into them in the lobby! Nick asked my son about his OCC bag, very nice kid and his father looked surprised when I said his names no knew who he was!

Prescient!

Loved his commit from the get go, he is the airapparent to Mullins. Best part is he will have a year to learn under Mullins next season. Syracuse brings in a ridiculous wealth of long pole defenders next year as well as returning most of this years D minus Wardwell, Young, and Messina. Were going to need a great season from our D next year to with the offense breaking in 5 new starters on offense, and there being major question marks at mid field.

NEW YORK STATE 2015 CHAMPIONSHIP STANDOUTS
By Casey Vock
Like every year, the New York State championships are a must-see display of lacrosse at its finest and feature a long list of student-athletes who will play the sport at the next level.

If you missed this weekend’s action, you can get caught up here on 3dRising.com. Below is a look at some the players who stood out on the final day of the New York State championships, which saw Niskayuna (Section II/Capital Region), Victor (Section V/Rochester) and Cold Spring Harbor (Section VIII/Nassau County) each crowed champions.

Nick Mellen, Defense, West Genesee, Sr. – Syracuse
If you watched the semifinals and state finals, you might not have much on Mellen to go with. That’s because in two games you wouldn’t have seen an attackman dodging on him. The athletic and aggressive defender again helped lead West Genesee to the state finals, like he did as a sophomore. Mellen’s quickness, stick skills (he scored five goals this year) and strength made him a nightmare matchup for any attackman at the high school level. In college, it will be interesting to see how he is used at Syracuse, as he has qualities that could potentially lend him to being used as a short-stick defender if he’s not able to start at close defense immediately. West Genesee’s loss against Niskayuna can’t outweigh the career Mellen had as one of the best to ever wear the Wildcats uniform. The respect other teams showed him in the state playoffs – essentially putting the ball as far away from him as possible – is telling.

@cvock: Mike Messere told me the last freshman at West Genny to be as impactful as Syracuse-bound Nick Mellen was some dude named John Zulberti.
Wow. I'm actually watching the WG v Niskayuna game (TW tape delay) ... any SU recruits other than Mellen to watch out for? Any 'Cuse recruits on Niskayuna?

Lucas Quinn on Nisky

They're both wearing 17 so that helps (Niska's uniforms are almost unreadable).

Nick Mellen
West Genesee (Camillus, N.Y.), Senior, Defense, Syracuse

Mellen helped West Genesee reach the New York State championship for an unbelievable 23rd time. Able to take attackmen completely out of the game thanks to quickness and a nasty streak, Mellen was instrumental West Genesee’s seven-game win streak that vaulted the Wildcats into the title matchup. Opposing teams game planned to simply avoid Mellen at all costs – in the state semifinals and finals. Upstate New York’s best defender, his excellent stick skills – he’s also a hockey standout – made him dangerous in transition as he also contributed five goals and two assists this season.

dangerous in transition

Sold.

Does this mean Syracuse will look to bring the run and gun style back to lacrosse? :D

Something about having space, momentum, and maybe a man advantage then watching the ball passed down and outside to goal line extended... it's deflating. I miss the days of a near-guaranteed shot off fast transitions.
