OT: 12-year-old Rochester boy dies from lacrosse injury

Probably commotio cordis - several lax players have died of the same thing. The heart takes a hit at one exact critical cycle of the heart beat. If an AED was not administered within seconds (or 2 or 3 minutes at most), it is very hard to restart the heart.

So sad, both for the parents of the deceased and for the the kid and his parents. Kid will carry this around for the rest of his life, and it's not his fault.

Same thing that has happened with baseball players. I think it can be avoided in lax by having the shoulder pads cover the heart.

Agreed. Surprised it hasn't been mandated, at least at the lower levels of play.
