Class of 2016 PF Harry Giles (NC) to Duke

Wake is actually in good shape with Giles. He lives very close to Winston-Salem and goes to a lot of their games. His teammate Brandon Childress is a Wake commit whose dad is a Wake assistant and one of the greatest players in school history. Danny Manning is considered one of the best big man coaches in the country. They will be in it until the very end I think.

Interesting. Good info, thank you. I haven't been paying much attention to his recruitment because I have gleaned enough from threads here that he would be a longshot to commit. I love that we are even in the conversation. He would look good in orange, though.

They won't tell the guys to go take a hike but you have to keep it real with them. Both have been recruited over and while I prefer Buss to stay more so than BJ, both will be buried in the depth chart and I don't think either will be happy riding the bench for the next few years. BJ's dad has already voiced a displeasure of his son playing time. That definitely won't change with CMac coming back, T-Rob, Lydon, G, Diagne, and Mali being able to play on the wings. Jordoo answered the Obokoh situation above. He's friends with TB and a good student whose biggest contribution might be boosting our APR. Plus who knows maybe he'll eventually be able to spot some decent minutes down the line, but I wouldn't hold my breath from what I've seen.

I think youre selling obokoh short.

IMO, Oboko will contribute far more than Patterson ever will. As for BJ, IMO the kid is just lost right now, and has zero confidence, and that has impacted his game. If he could get a dunk and hit a short jumper, everything else would flow. I think its unfair to judge his ability going forward.

If the NCAA didn't screw around with his redshirt and he had an extra year of eligibility then I would feel different. Right now he's a Sophomore that JB doesn't even feel confident putting in for 30 seconds throughout the whole season. If he can't log minutes with the limited depth that we have now then you think he will when TB, DC2, and Diagne are all around for the next few years? Plus when CMac returns from injury I'm sure JB wouldn't hesitate to play him at the 5 again if needed over Chino. Look I'm not hating on the kid and if you were familiar with some of my reports on him back in HS, I was really high on him being a contributor down the line at SU. Losing that redshirt year and with who we have potentially playing in front of him in the following seasons will make it tough for him to see the floor.

Unfortunately Buss can't shoot to save his life, but I think he does everything else well and we seem to take off and have our best runs when he plays over KJ. He's a good defender, passer, and has shown when he actually takes it to the rack instead of launching threes like Cooney that he can have some success. It's just a bad style fit at SU for him. If he played at Pitt where he can be their typical rugged defensive specialist, or at Louisville as an energy guy off the bench to cause havoc in their man press he would have much more success. The VA Tech comeback last week is a good example of that.

Kind of hard to believe that Billy Celluck could get meaningful minutes, but not this guy.

I thought he is a rs frosh. Agree that changes things. I think he has tools to grow into a good player if hes given time.

That was the plan and maybe somebody can dig up the article that explained what happened for you. Our buddies at the NCAA had decided since his school had reclassified him that he did more school work than he should've, so they decided to take a year of eligibility in college away from him smh. I really wish I was joking about that but unfortunately I'm not.

Hey, you let kids graduate highschool early, next thing you know they are using college scholarships to get masters degrees. Do you really want to set that precedent?

The Giles thread had been moved down past the first page. Has this ship sailed?

Sadly if there was ever a target of ours we lost with the ship reductions, it was Giles. Our chances were slim to begin with, but given how good he is it was worth fighting to try and stay in. If you missed you could recover. Now if we go all in on him, and don't get him (which is likely) we'd be so far behind the 8 ball in bringing in talent with Moyer

Harry Giles is the No. 1 player in ESPN Class of 2016. His current list: Duke, UNC, Wake, UK, Kansas, Ohio State, Syracuse, UNLV

Do we have any chance with this kid or is just positive window dressing? I like we are in there with these schools is it another Duke, Kansas or Kentucky situation?
I said it when I first saw his highlights he's the best player in the class and would absolutely be the best player to wear Orange since Melo.

But our chances were iffy at best before the sanctions when we got ship reductions, our chances died completely. We couldn't risk waiting for a superstar, even one as good as Giles will be, especially when our chances were so small to begin with. But man before sanctions it sure was fun to think about a class of Battle, Giles and Moyer.

Also we used our 'big slot' on Chukwu, so even if the slimmest of slim hopes were still alive at that moment, they were officially over.

Frankly id expect we haven't spoken to Giles since sanctions came down. But someone like Francis could probably make a more educated comment than I in regards to that.

The only scenario I can even propose that would give us Giles would be if Battle goes elsewhere (which I've been told is an absolute lock not to happen), Giles decides he hates his home state immensely, has always had a secret love of Orange, comes up to visit on his own dime to prove that he really likes us and isn't just trying to get a free trip as an official, and then tells JB and Hop he wants in while standing in the Melo Center. While that would be the biggest most important coup we have ever had, it's never ever going to happen.

Our next best chance at a transcendent talent is going to be Porter in '17 with the help of Moyer.

From what I recall, i actually think Francis thought Wake had a realistic shot at him. It was going to be hard to get him to leave the state of Carolina. I know UNC wants him bad, but with their situation and all...
