Here is the field for the NCAA Division I (Football Championship Subdivision, or FCS) playoffs, with the team name, the state they are in, (if it’s not already part of the name), the won-loss record, the points for and against, who they lost to, their ranking, their all- time post season record, (including NAIA and other NCAA divisions and small college bowl games, and championships won, and championships won, NCAA NAIA and also Black College National champions. They run a 24 team playoff with the bottom sixteen teams playing “play-in” games the first week, which was last week. Here are the teams that will be playing in the second round.

COASTAL CAROLINA 10-2 (559-374) #11, 1-3 (0)

They beat Bethune Cookman 48-24 in the first round. Alex Ross threw for 256 yards and 4 touchdown passes. The Chanticleers, (I kid you not) jumped out to a 21-3 first quarter lead on two of those throws plus a fumble return and were never headed, although they only led in total offense by 473-460.

FORDHAM 11-1 (498-307) #9, 3-4 (0)
They lost to Lafayette 14-27 on 11/16.
They beat Sacred Heart 37-27 in the first round. The Rams scored 20 points off of 4 turnovers, two fumbles and two interceptions. Michael Nebrich completed 32 of 51 passes for 413 yards and three TDS - and rushed for a score. Sacred Heart was powered by Keshauda Spence's 25 carries for 194 yards and 2 TDs. The Rams out-gained the Pioneers 539-414. Fordham led at the half 31-17 but Sacred Heart made a run at them, getting a field goal off of an opening 11 play drive and then a 57 yard run by Spencer that set up his one yard plunge. Fordham replied with two drives of their own for fourth quarter field goals, the last a 10 play drive with 8 runs that gave them a 10 point lead with 2:11 left. Tree incomplete passes and a sack resolved things in the Ram’s favor.

JACKSONVILLE STATE 9-3 (473-309), #20, 18-12 (1)

They lost to Central Michigan 21-24 on 9/7, Lehigh 27-34 on 9/28, Towson 28-44 on 10/5 and William and Mary 0-17 on 11/2.
They beat Lafayette 45-7 in the first round. Sean Goldrich threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns and R.J. Harris had 173 yards receiving and a score while Nick Cefalo had an 86 yard punt return for another score. The game was 31-0 at halftime. The Wildcats had 551 yards total offense, (to 333): 283 on the ground and 268 in the air. It’s indicative of the number of FCS schools that have migrated to FBS, (so they can get those guarantee games with the big schools) that the leopards were in the playoffs with a 5-6 record.

SAM HOUSTON STATE 8-4 ( ), #14, 13-8-1 (1)
They lost to Texas A&< 28-65 on 9/7, McNeese State 23-31 on 10/19, Southeastern Louisiana 21-34 on 11/16 and Central Arkansas 31-49 on 11/23

Southern Utah took a 10-0 lead but the Bearkats scored the next 30 points, then salted it away with three fourth quarter touchdowns , two by Timothy Flanders, who rushed for 152 yards. Sam Houston won the yardage battle, 531-336 and rushed for 355 yards.

They beat South Carolina State 30-20 in the first round.Jarius Hollman had a 90-yard TD punt return and another 34-yard TD interception return, the latter giving the Paladins a27-13 third quarter lead and allowing them to coast to victory. The Second Round match-ups:

Furman at North Dakota State
Tennessee State at Eastern Illinois
South Dakota State at Eastern Washington
Sam Houston State at Southeastern Louisiana
New Hampshire at Maine
Jacksonville State at McNeese State
Fordham at Towson
Coastal Carolina at Montana

Comments: The North Dakota State Bison go for their third straight National Championship, something their FBS equivalent, Alabama, probably won’t get to do. Sam Houston State was the team they beat the last two years. Could the third time be the charm for them? Watch out for unheralded Eastern Illinois, the nation’s highest scoring team who have beaten several teams in this tournament and lost by 4 to Northern Illinois. Back in the day, Fordham was a name to conjure with, with their “Seven Blocks of Granite”, (one of whom was Vince Lombardi). They once played in the Cotton and the Sugar Bowls. Now they are looking for an FCS championship.
