Been following this young man's progress for quite some time now and I'm really impressed with what I see. He is a genuine competitor and has that fire and ability to take a team to a new level of success. Guys like Rex can become true game changers with the proper development. While I realize he sustained a season ending injury recently, I have no doubt that he'll return to the field hungrier than ever. Syracuse got em' a good one. Here's a quick bio on the star QB-

Honorable mention all state his junior year. 4.75 40, 32" vertical, 285 bench, and 525 squat. Plant High was prodominately a run first team this past year. In 2014, was 152-248 passing with 21 TDs and 9 INTs and 2,145 yards. Also had 279 yards on the ground with 6 TDs. Has a younger brother, Judge Culpepper, who could follow in his brother's footsteps to SU. Grandfather played at Fla.

As you probably know, Rex tore his ACL while running 7 on 7's in late July. His surgery is planned for early August under the careful watch of respected athletic surgeon Dr. Seth Gasser. Dr. Gasser has previously done plenty of work with both high school and professional athletes surrounding the Tampa area including the Tampa Bay Buccs, Tampa Bay Lightning, and is the team physician for Culpepper's high school team. While he will miss his senior season, look for him to be fully healthy and highly motivated when he arrives at camp in Syracuse. And you know he's itching to get back out on the wakeboard too.

Able to run and create on his own, Rex also could air it out, showing off strength and nice touch. More recently, Scout praised his overall strength, leadership and smarts, while raising concerns about his short passing game. But he's put the time and work in to be as good as he can and he's very dedicated. Junior quarterback Cade Weldon — one of Tampa Bay's top passers last season and a 6-foot-2, 190-pound Division I-A prospect — carried the weight of those expectations square on his shoulders.

The Dragons hadn't made it very far in the playoffs since winning the Class 3A championship in 2010. But before the season began, coach Jeremy Earle had a gut feeling all of that was about to change.

"Playing 11 games last year and being able to experience all the different scenarios, you can't really simulate in practice. It's just really set him apart as compared to last year," Earle said of his starting quarterback before a preseason practice. "To be able to have the position with the quarterback, it's very eerie the similarities of how 2010, 2009 and all that went down."

But in the first quarter of the season opener, all of that came crashing down.

Weldon tore his ACL against Tampa Bay Tech, becoming the second 2,000-yard passer in Hillsborough County this year to go down with the season-ending injury. In July, Plant's Rex Culpepper tore his ACL during a 7-on-7 tournament at USF.

While their high school teams were left with big holes to fill, Culpepper and Weldon had their college futures to consider.

Culpepper, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound recruit, had committed to Syracuse just weeks before his injury, choosing the Orange over 14 other D-I offers. Still, Plant coach Robert Weiner said, the day of the injury, a million questions — including ones about his recruitment — ran through the quarterback's head.

Shafer, who has been the head coach at Syracuse since 2013, was returning from a trip abroad, Weiner said, but called Culpepper to let him know the Orange was still behind him.

Though Weiner said he's not sure how Syracuse would have responded had Culpepper not already been committed to the university, he believes the way the Panthers have structured the recruiting process for all their players makes a difference.

"We don't allow our kids to commit to a place and then decommit. … Most coaches that we deal with, they know they're not just dealing with a name of another school. They know if a kid from Plant says they're going to their school, he's going to their school," he said. "I think in turn, like in situations like (Rex's), that probably spawns immediate loyalty back to us as well."

Relationships and trust were pivotal in Culpepper's decision to migrate north to Central New York with teammate and newly-minted three-star, Scoop Bradshaw.

"I have a really good relationship with coach (Tim) Lester and coach (Scott) Shafer," Culpepper said. "Coach Lester just got moved to offensive coordinator, and I'm the first quarterback that he's got a commit from at that position, so that means a lot to me."

Culpepper, the 66th-ranked signal-caller in the nation on Scout, will certainly have his plate full leading up to his arrival to the ACC.

"I'm taking my official from Dec. 4-6," Culpepper said. "I might go on some unofficials, but I'm pretty involved with therapy and everything else. I want to get better before I start worrying about getting up to college."

Can the coaches actually talk to them there, or is that out of bounds with the NCAA?

I believe that is still not allowed. I think it is only one off campus contact/visit during this period for evaluation.. which means academic or athletic.

Edit: You made me work...No off campus contact until the Sunday following the last Saturday in November.
