Quint's Top 20: Comeback City

11. Syracuse — Goalie Don Madonna delivered one of the most impressive outlet passes I've ever seen. It was a 48-yard frozen rope on target that allowed Ryan Simmons to catch in full stride and bee-line toward the goal. Simmons stuck the game-winner in the third OT, giving Syracuse a much-needed victory. Madonna's heroics amplify the importance of goalie stick-handling, that is the ability to throw 20, 40, 60 or even 80 yard strikes in game situations. Those skills are acquired through extra reps before and after practice. Madonna's bomb was the play of the week.

Army took a 6-1 early lead and seemed poised for a runaway, but SU scored five third quarter goals to pull even. The Orange were aided by an EMO to start the third quarter and nine different goal scorers, a good sign in the winter portion of the season. Brett Kennedy filled in for injured defender Tyson Bomberry.

HHH travel to Charlottesville on Saturday. The change of surface to grass will be challenging.

That fantastic long pass, catch and score was a thing of beauty. What amazes is that it was not a fluke play or Hail Mary pass but a pinpoint laser thrown to a intended target downfield on the move because Madonna has that passing ability. Meanwhile Simmons has the presence of mind to run to an open area knowing that Madonna can make that pass and he makes that catch on the run and ensuing conversion looked easier than it was. Can not overstate what a terrific play that was by both. Simply terrific.

Galloway used to toss some mean outlets.

“The Assist” by Madonna to Simmons is easily a Top 10 play by a Syracuse team in the past 10-15 years. Spectacular play.

Madonna is aggressive. I’m sure that we’ll have more of these moments from him as well as some “what just happened” moments. That happens with aggressive players. Too many players and coaches play to not lose. Aggressive players play to win.

And, more importantly, they are not afraid to lose because they made an error. You have to have that mentality.

It is better to lose trying your best to win than to try not to lose and lose anyway. Stick with what got you there. The Orange scored nine times in the second half. Rinse and repeat.

I am OK with slowing down and eating the clock when a game is in hand.
