Recruiting Rundown: Incoming Freshman Rankings

TOP 30 DEFENSEMEN + WATCHLIST

7. Nick Mellen / Syracuse / West Genesee (N.Y.)

Also playing football and hockey, Mellen is as tough as nails and possesses tremendous foot speed and takeaway checks, thriving at both close D and LSM for the Wildcats. As a senior, he posted 17 points with 47 GB’s, helping them to an 18-2 mark in his final season. Since the Orange bring in a great defensive class, it’s hard to say how soon Mellen will play as a freshman, but there’s no doubt that the local product will impress the coaching staff.

10. Andrew Helmer / Syracuse / Summit (N.J.)

A significant reason why the Hilltoppers’ zone defense surrendered an average of less than 3.5 goals per game over the last two seasons, Helmer has a terrific approach, quick feet and is an asset in the clearing game. Also a football standout, he was twice an All-State pick on the lacrosse field while helping Summit to a pair of Group 2 titles. Projects well at the next level and is expected to turn heads at ‘Cuse.

16. Tyson Bomberry / Syracuse / Avon Old Farms (Conn.)

Watchlist
David Dilts / Syracuse / Culver (Ind.)

Not a bad list but Solomon should be at least 20-30 spots higher. Think they nailed Voigt and most others. I think Romano is a top 30 guy but can't argue 38

TOP 20 INCOMING CLASSES

8. Syracuse

Though the Orange bring in seven Top 100 prospects, it’s hard to say what kind of impact they’ll make due to shear roster size. Nick Mellen, Andrew Helmer and Tyson Bomberry are attractive defensive recruits, all differing in what they bring to the table. Texas product Sam Romano looks the part of an ACC midfielder, while Bradley Voigt and Nathan Solomon are accomplished scorers at attack. As always, look for ‘Cuse to make waves with a mid-year transfer or two.

There are some very big athletes in this class! Reece Belcher is huge for a F/O guy and Dilts is a bigger defender, and those two are some of the less heralded of the class. I think Cuse has been one of the smaller ACC teams the last few years in the midfield and defensive midfield. Hope that changes soon!

I put more faith in Inside Lacrosse... TY Xander has never ever played lacrosse and has no clue about the sport

I'm also hearing that Hutch and Orazietti are the surprise of the recruiting class...I call them undrafted free agents

I heard good things about Orazietti a while back, good to know the buzz is still strong. SU always seems to have someone fly under the radar in these classes.

If you are not starting or getting significant playing time you should redshirt if you're a freshman... Why waste a year to play the last few minutes of a blowout

Not every student-athlete wants to pursue their undergrad degree in five years or they may have plans for grad school elsewhere. Also, lax is limited in their scholies so an extra year means another year of expenses which may not be practical for everyone.

Not surprised Michigan is starting to make some inroads in the recruiting scene.Certainly have the resources and brand name to become a major player in Division 1 lacrosse. Expect them to be regular in the NCAA tournament soon.

They have done a nice job but they still have a ways to go. They dont have anywhere near the qualiy depth teams like Duke, JHU, Syracuse and Maryland have and there are major concerns about whether or not the current staff there can win on the D1 level. .
