As I did last year, I’m going to make monthly posts giving the American and National League leaders in my two favorite baseball statistics: runs produced and bases produced. Runs produced are runs scored + runs batted in minus home runs so you don’t count them twice, (because a home run is the same run being batted in and also scored by the same person). Bases produced is total batting bases, (one for a single, two for a double, three for a triple and four for a home run) plus walks plus steals. I like these numbers because they are simple to compute and understand and produce a number the meaning of which can be easily comprehended. You can sit in the stands, watch a play and figure out how many runs or bases that player has now produced and know where he is in the standings. I prefer gross numbers because they are things that actually happened and you don’t know if rates of production would have been maintained. But if you want a rate I suggest per game, since the players we are comparing will all tend to be starters who will normally play the entire game. A superior offensive player will tend to produce an average of about 3 bases and 1 run per game. Again, easy to understand and comprehend. I’ll rank the players based on gross numbers and record their per-game averages as well.

Comment: I’ve complain then Josh Donaldson and Paul Goldschmidt weren’t getting their due when their numbers were comparable to Mike Trout and Bryce Harper but that has changed. They’ve both had feature stories in Sports Illustrated. Donald’s biggest problem in getting the American League MVP is that he may split some votes with his teammates, who are also putting up big numbers, (and giving him a chance to as well). But Josh’s is so strong I think he’ll win it anyway. He’s on his way to .301-45HR-136RBI-127RS.

Mike Trout had only 12 runs produced in 29 games in August and dropped from 2nd to out of the top ten. Brett Gardner was fourth but dropped out at 18 runs produced in 27 games. Yoenis Cespedes was 8th with 105 in 102 games (1.03) but got traded to the Mets right at the end of July. In August he produced 35 runs in 27 games(1.30) for the Mets for a total of 140 in 129 games (1.09). But since he changed leagues, he can’t make the top ten in either one.

Mark Teixeira (24 bases produced in 16 games) and Alex Rodriguez (38 in 25 games) dropped out of the bases top ten as the Yankees went into a bad slump.

Paul Goldschmidt, D-Backs 154 in 130 games (1.18) 32 in 29 August games (1.10)
Andrew McCutcheon, Pirates 140 in 126 games (1.11) 32 in 27 August games (1.19)
Nolan Arendo, Rockies 139 in 125 games (1.11) 30 in 27 August games (1.11)
Bryce Harper, Nationals 138 in 123 games (1.12) 31 in 28 August games (1.11)
A J Pollack, Diamondbacks 135 in 126 games (1.07) 34 in 26 August games (1.31)
Kris Bryant, Cubs 132 in 121 games (1.09) 32 in 28 August games (1.14)
Matt Kemp, Dodgers 129 in 128 games (1.01) 35 in 26 August games (1.35)
Ryan Braun, Brewers 128 in 123 games (1.04) 26 in 26 August games (1.00)
Matt Carpenter, Cardinals 128 in 128 games (1.02) 30 in 28 August games (1.07)
Buster Posey, Giants 127 in 122 games (1.04) 22 in 28 August games (0.79)

Bases Produced
Paul Goldschmidt, D-Backs 384 in 130 games (2.95) 66 in 29 August games (2.28)
Joey Votto, Reds 369 in 128 games (2.88) 93 in 28 August games (3.32)
Bryce Harper, Nationals 368 in 123 games (3.14) 70 in 28 August games (2.50)
Anthony Rizzo, Cubs 324 in 129 games (2.51) 66 in 28 August games (2.36)
A J Pollock, Diamondbacks 315 in 126 games (2.50) 77 in 26 August games (2.96)
(541 plate appearances)
Andrew McCutcheon, Pirates 315 in 126 games (2.39) 78 in 27 August games (2.89)
(546 plate appearances)
Todd Frazier, Reds 312 in 128 games (2.63) 52 in 29 August games (1.79)
Curtis Granderson, Mets 306 in 130 games (2.35) 79 in 27 August games (2.93)
Charlie Blackmon, Rockies 305 in 128 games (2.38) 69 in 28 August games (2.46)
Dexter Fowler, Cubs 293 in 126 games (2.33) 79 in 27 August games (2.93)

Comment: Paul Goldschmidt is on a pace, (as of 9/1/15), for .325 with 125 walks, 32 homers 25 steals 120rbi and 105 runs scored. Bryce Harper is on a pace for .329 123 walks, 39 homers 8 steals, 96rbi 115 runs scored. Who will get the MVP? Harper, because his team is better (presently 71-65 vs. 65-72), he plays in the east and he has been more hyped. Also, Goldschmidt plays in Arizona, which is near Colorado and therefore his numbers don’t count, (to some people).

Todd Frazier has 18 runs produced in 29 games and dropped out of the top 10 after having been third at the end of July. Brandon Crawford had 16 RP in 23 games and also dropped out.

Adrian Gonzalez produced 46 bases in 26 games and Nolan Arendo 57 in 27 games to drop out of the bases top ten.
