The creation of the Final Four format in the mid-1980s may well have saved the sport. It certainly gave it a prominent and consistent place in the sporting calendar. But it is time to ask whether we need to change the format by which Division I men’s championships are determined.
Or more precisely, it is this: Has our sport outgrown the Final Four? (And apologies to the NCAA, which would prefer we call it Championship Weekend. I went with Final Four for brevity and clarity.)
Based on numerous discussions with coaches, administrators and fans this past weekend in Philadelphia, these are some of the questions we need to consider. ..
