Hop is 45, Gerry is 31. Hop could conceivably coach 20-25 years, if he's successful. Are you really trying to suggest that Gerry McNamara will be willing to wait until he's in his mid-50s for his first head coaching job? Because you're delusional if you think that.

Simple solution. Split the head coaching duties in 2. Gerry as offensive grit coach + Mike coaching defensive can-do= SU Final For

isnt gmac the #3 assistant?

you guys are blinded by his champ ring.

if ped st ever calls, it will be after hes at least the #1 assistant for a bit and has been the top recruiter.

lets see how Hop shakes his staff out, that will tell us where gmac is in the scheme of things.

if hes the #2, then after some experience and success...a siena or the like could call for sure. after that...yes, all bets are off.

if hes the #1, then maybe yeah, a crappy p5 hoop school could call, but imo him as the #1 could still lead to a mid, maybe a larger mid like one of the old bigeasts.

id dial it down a bit, but i understand that to some of you he pisses beer and craps gold bars.

Exactly let's see GMac win some more recruiting battles before we anoint him a future head coach. I would like to see GMac do well enough as an SU assistant to get his own HC job. I understood wanting to keep Hopkins around because JB was always on his back nine and was going to be the next guy.
GMac is way to young to wait for Hopkins. GMac should want to move on and get his own HC job. Hopefully he continues to grow as he has been a great recruiter with Moyer and deserves credit for that.

I have to agree. Gerry is a long way from being a head coach at a D1 program. He has the potential to be a great coach but will need to work his way up. University of Scranton or Le Moyne College would be much more likely destinations for his first head coaching gig. He will still need to progress as an assistant before he lands one of those DIII jobs.

With that being said, I do think he craps gold bars and would love for GMac to be the first SU head coach to win a national championship as both a player and head coach!

Gerry was the lead recruiter for Moyer and now he's going to go recruit D-III guys?

You don't get to be a head coach by simply being a good recruiter. What team has he coached? D-III or D-II would be a good starting place to prove himself.
Right now he has a long way to go to be at the level that Red has earned.

Truly. You don't leave an assistant job at an elite program to become a D2 or D3 coach. You would start at a D1 mid-major at worst.

Who has Steve Wojiechowski Coached? He got the Marquette job and is only slightly older than Gerry. What makes him more qualified than Gerry? Very few coaches have gone the John Beilein route.

Assistants build relationships with AAU coaches, and that's a big part of what makes them attractive to other D-1 programs as head coaches.

Johnny Dawkins got the Stanford job, Quinn Snyder got the Mizzou job, Jeff Capel got the VCU job, Wojo got the Marquette job.

If GMac shows he can recruit he will get a D-1 job in the future, but it would likely be on the midmajor level first.

Coach K. Nuff said.

Boeheims got pretty decent respect himself for his ability to develop assistants. Look, gmacs probably not going straight to a philly 5 school and maybe not even penn st. But if he has a good 5 years or more here, he could definitely move to a mid major (Duquesne?). Look no further than Rob Murphy. Idk if he was our #2 or #3 assistant, but he got the job at EMI and seems to be doing well. Respected SU assistants don't go d-III. If Gerry wanted to start now, that's where he's prolly end up, but after 5+ successful years? No way.

Outside of Pitino who was here for a very short time, who else has had a successful head coaching career that has been an assistant under JB?

Wayne Morgan, Ralph Willard , Tim O'Toole Louis Orr . Each had some success as a head coach at D1 programs.
