Again this year I’ll be keeping track of those teams in contention for the very real four team College Football Playoff as well as those for my fictional creations, the Pesci Bowl, (named after short but feisty actor Joe Pesci), and the dreaded Ty-D Bowl, named after the toilet bowl cleaning product

The playoff is four the best four power conference-level teams in the country, (Notre Dame counts as aa power conference team). The Pesci Bowl is for the two best non-power conference teams. The Ty-D Bowl is for the two worst FBS teams in the country. The idea is to track the contenders through their coming schedules, which will tell us what games to look out for. I’ll start with the teams with perfect records: undefeated power conference and non-power conference teams and winless FBS teams. When there are fewer than 3 undefeated power teams or 2 non-power teams or 2 winless teams, then I’ll include the 1 loss and 1 win teams. But for now, we are looking at perfect records.

THE PLAYOFF

Alabama 7-0 (299-71) ranked #1 in both polls
10/21 vs. Tennessee 3-3 (130-143)
10/28 BYE
11/4 vs. Louisiana State 5-2 (179-136) #24/#25
11/11 at Mississippi State 4-2 (191-118)
11/18 vs. Mercer 4-3 (211-123) (FCS)
11/25 at Auburn 5-2 (238-105) ranked #21 in both polls
Comment: LSU is getting feisty. Auburn always is. Then comes Georgia in the SEC title game. But even a one-loss Alabama team will make the playoff, no sweat.

Penn State 6-0 (238-54) ranked #2 in both polls
10/21 vs. Michigan 5-1 (163-88) ranked #19/#15
10/28 at Ohio State 6-1 (331-108) ranked #6/#6
11/4 at Michigan State 5-1 (142-109) ranked #18/#19
11/11 vs. Rutgers 2-4 (144-153)
11/18 vs. Nebraska 3-4 (181-216)
11/25 at Maryland 3-3 (190-219)
Comment: If they can get past the gauntlet of the next three games, Wisconsin should be waiting for them in the Big Ten Title game. They’ve got a good chance to fail but also a good chance to prove themselves.

Georgia 7-0 (263-88) ranked #3 in both polls
10/21 BYE
10/28 at Florida 3-3 (142-140)
11/4 vs. South Carolina 5-2 (176-135)
11/11 at Auburn 5-2 (238-105) ranked #21 in both polls
11/18 vs. Kentucky 5-1 (165-128)
11/25 at Georgia Tech 3-2 (170-101)
Comment: Georgia has some challenges, especially Auburn. Then comes the Tide. But the Bulldogs are pretty good themselves.

Texas Christian 6-0 (248-104) ranked #6/#7
10/21 vs. Kansas 1-5 (148-269)
10/28 at Iowa State 4-2 (214-130)
11/4 vs. Texas 3-3 (202-148)
11/11 at Oklahoma 5-1 (252-140) ranked #9 in both polls
11/18 at Texas Tech 4-2 (269-185) ranked #24 in the writer’s poll
11/24 vs. Baylor 0-6 (152-240)
Comment: Upsets are common in this conference but the Oklahoma-Texas Tech stretch is the most likely to cost them. There is no Big 12 title game, so if they run the schedule, they are in.

Wisconsin 6-0 (218-80) ranked #7/#6
10/21 vs. Maryland 3-2 (169-182)
10/28 at Illinois 2-4 (113-183)
11/4 at Indiana 3-3 (168-155)
11/11 vs. Iowa 4-2 (173-112)
11/18 vs. Michigan 5-1 (163-88) ranked #19/#15
11/25 at Minnesota 3-3 (167-116)
Comment: Only Illinois has a losing record. But I think the Badgers are better than all these teams. But that may not be true in the Big Ten title game.

U of Miami 5-0 (173-93) ranked #11/#10
10/21 vs. Syracuse 4-3 (219-170)
10/28 at North Carolina 1-6 (166-218)
11/4 vs. Virginia Tech 5-1 (200-82) ranked #14 in both polls
11/11 vs. Notre Dame 5-1 (240-101) ranked #13/#16
11/18 vs. Virginia 5-1 (173-120)
11/24 at Pittsburgh 2-5 (163-220)
Comment: The “U” may be back but they’ve got a hard road ahead. Besides mighty Syracuse they play three one-loss teams. But they play them all at home. Clemson or NC State be waiting in the ACC title game.

One loss teams: Clemson 6-1 ,Kentucky 5-1, Michigan 5-2, Michigan State 5-2, North Carolina State 6-1,Ohio State 6-1, Oklahoma 5-1, Oklahoma State 5-1, Southern California 6-1, Virginia 5-1, Virginia Tech 5-2, Washington 6-1, Washington State 6-1

PESCI BOWL

South Florida 6-0 (257-103) ranked #16/#13
10/21 at Tulane 3-3 (171-161)
10/28 vs. Cincinnati 2-5 (140-231)
11/4 vs. Houston 4-2 (153-126)
11/11 BYE
11/18 vs. Tulsa 2-5 (248-281)
11/24 at Central Florida 5-0 (253-84) ranked #20 in both polls
Comment: An 11-0 South Florida vs. a 10-0 Central Florida, (both have lost games to hurricanes), could really ignite this rivalry. Houston could have something to say about that and there’s still the conference title game.

Central Florida 5-0 (253-84) ranked #20 in both polls
10/21 at Navy 5-1 (231-168)
11/4 at Southern Methodist 4-2 (263-186)
11/11 vs. Connecticut 2-4 (170-242)
11/18 at Temple 3-4 (139-184)
11/24 vs. South Florida 6-0 (257-103) ranked #16/#13
Comment: Navy or SMU could spoil the party vs. USF. Both are on the road and Navy will be determined to bounce back after their first loss.

One loss teams: Marshall 5-1, Memphis 5-1, Navy 5-1 , San Diego State 6-1, Toledo 5-1,

TY-D BOWL

Baylor 0-6 (152-240)
10/21 vs. West Virginia 4-2 (265-167) ranked #23 in both polls
10/28 vs. Texas 3-3 (202-148)
11/4 at Kansas 1-5 (148-269)
11/11 vs. Texas Tech in Arlington ranked 4-2 (269-185)
11/19 vs. Iowa State 4-2 (214-130)
11/24 at Texas Christian 6-0 (248-104) ranked #4 in both polls
Comment: Sic Transit Gloria! This is the school we wanted to be like, (on the field). Getting to the top is hard but staying there is harder if you aren’t one of college football’s blue bloods. But I’ll bet they can still beat Kansas. What is Mark Mangino doing these days? (Probably hollering at somebody.)

Charlotte 0-7 (91-231)
10/21 vs. Alabama-Birmingham 4-2 (190-172)
10/28 BYE
11/4 at Old Dominion 2-4 (102-208)
11/11 vs. Middle Tennessee 3-4 (143-178)
11/18 at Southern Mississippi 4-2 (173-113)
11/25 vs. Florida Atlantic 3-3 (205-155)
Comment: The good news: They don’t play any really strong teams the rest of the way. The bad news: They don’t play any really weak teams, either.

Georgia Southern 0-5 (88-193)
10/21 at Massachusetts 0-6 (154-197)
10/28 at Troy 4-2 (128-112)
11/4 vs. Georgia State 3-2 (112-131)
11/9 at Appalachian State 4-2 (171-122)
11/18 vs. South Alabama 2-4 (137-162)
11/25 at Louisiana (formerly Louisiana-Lafayette, formerly SW Louisiana) 3-3 (209-238)
12/2 at Coastal Carolina 1-5 (152-239)
Comment: A long time FCS power with many national championships that will never win another because they went for the big bucks in FBS, the Eagles find themselves at 0-5. But they’ll have several shots at cracking that goose egg, including one against another former FCS champ, UMASS this Saturday. Actually, it was Georgia Southern that Massachusetts beat for the 1998 FCS championship. .

Massachusetts 0-6 (154 197)
10/21 vs. Georgia Southern 0-5 (88-193)
10/28 vs. Appalachian State 4-2 (171-122)
11/4 at Mississippi State 4-2 (191-118)
11/11 vs. Maine at Fenway Park 2-3 (144-122) (FCS)
11/18 at Brigham Young 1-6 (80-191)
Comment: The Minutemen spent some unproductive time in the MAC and are now trying to go independent, which means they have to beg for games. Maybe they could beat old Yankee Conference rival Maine. Maybe they should go back to where they belong?

Texas- El Paso 0-7 (86-265)
10/21 BYE
10/28 vs. Texas- San Antonio 3-2 (167-101)
11/4 at Middle Tennessee 3-4 (143-178)
11/11 at North Texas 4-2 (223-196)
11/18 vs. Louisiana Tech 3-3 (168-159)
11/25 at Alabama-Birmingham 4-2 (190-172)
Comment: UTEP, (formerly Texas Western), has had 21 seasons since 1972 in which they won 2 or fewer games. So this is familiar territory for them. The remaining schedule is like Charlottes: no great challenges but no easy marks, either.

On win teams: Bowling Green 1-6, Brigham Young 1-6, Costal Carolina 1-5, East Carolina 1-6, Kansas 1-5, Missouri 1-5, Nevada-Reno 1-6, North Carolina 1-6, Rice 1-5, Oregon State 1-6, San Jose State 1-7, Texas State 1-6
