Again this year I’ll be keeping track of those teams in contention for the very real four team College Football Playoff as well as those for my fictional creations, the Pesci Bowl, (named after short but feisty actor Joe Pesci), and the dreaded Ty-D Bowl, named after the toilet bowl cleaning product.

The playoff is four the best four power conference-level teams in the country, (Notre Dame counts as aa power conference team). The Pesci Bowl is for the two best non-power conference teams. The Ty-D Bowl is for the two worst FBS teams in the country. The idea is to track the contenders through their coming schedules, which will tell us what games to look out for. I’ll start with the teams with perfect records: undefeated power conference and non-power conference teams and winless FBS teams. When there are fewer than 3 undefeated power teams or 2 non-power teams or 2 winless teams, then I’ll include the 1 loss and 1 win teams. But for now, we are looking at perfect records.

THE PLAYOFF

Georgia 9-0 (329-105) ranked #2 in both polls but #1 by the committee
11/11 at Auburn 7-2 (332-152) ranked #10 in both polls and by the committee
11/18 vs. Kentucky 6-3 (235-236)
11/25 at Georgia Tech 4-4 (254-189)
Comment: Georgia has a serious challenge each week, especially Auburn. Then comes the Tide. But the Bulldogs are pretty good themselves.

Alabama 9-0 (368-88) ranked #1 by the writers and coaches #2 by the committee
11/11 at Mississippi State 7-2 (305-162) ranked #13/#18 in the polls and #16 by the committee
11/18 vs. Mercer 4-5 (235-171) (FCS)
11/25 at Auburn 7-2 (332-152) ranked #10 in both polls and by the committee
Comment: Mississippi State is still feisty. Auburn is always feisty. Then comes Georgia in the SEC title game. Would a Georgia-Alabama loser, make the playoff?

Wisconsin 9-0 (325-120) ranked #6/ #3 in the polls but #8 by the committee
11/11 vs. Iowa 5-3 (200-139)
11/18 vs. Michigan 6-2 (211-144) ranked #21/#22 by the coaches but unranked by the committee
11/25 at Minnesota 4-4 (201-150)
Comment: Iowa and Michigan could certainly spoil things and Minnesota is a rivalry game. But the big problem is that everyone in the Big 10 East has two losses. Could an unbeaten power conference champion be left out of a 4 team playoff?

U of Miami 8-0 (254-141) ranked #7/#6 by the polls but 7th by the committee
11/11 vs. Notre Dame 8-1 (372-166 ranked #3/#5 by the polls but #3 by the committee
11/18 vs. Virginia 6-3 (237-228)
11/24 at Pittsburgh 4-5 (218-251)
Comment: The Canes had been barely scraping by. Then they waxed the Hokies. But let’s see what they can do with the Irish before we get excited about their chances. .

One loss teams: Clemson 8-1, Notre Dame 8-1, Oklahoma 8-1, Texas Christian 8-1, Washington 8-1

PESCI BOWL

Central Florida 8-0 (388-162) ranked #14/#12 by the polls but #18 by the committee
11/11 vs. Connecticut 3-6 (222-345)
11/18 at Temple 4-5 (201-241)
11/24 vs. South Florida 8-1 (352-179) ranked #22/#21 by the coaches but unranked by the committee
Comment: Houston soiled the season-ending party against USF but they didn’t spoil it. It will still decide the division and maybe who gets into the Pesci Bowl.

Memphis 8-1 (381-281) ranked #20/#19 in the polls but #22 by the committee
11/18 vs. Southern Methodist 6-3 (356-279)
11/25 vs. East Carolina 2-7 (214-419)
Comment: Memphis will likely meet the winner of the UCF-USF game in the C-USA finals and the winner of that will go to the Pesci Bowl unless SMU messes things up some more.

South Florida 8-1 (352-179) ranked #22/#21 but unranked by the committee
11/16 vs. Tulsa 2-8 (310-380)
11/24 at Central Florida 8-0 (388-162) ranked #14/#12 by the polls but #18 by the committee
Comment: The Bulls and Knights should stampede into the UCF game at 9-1. Will Gameday be there?

Did you know that Central and South Florida are both bigger schools that Florida and Florida State and that they are in much bigger cities and thus better recruiting areas?

Toledo 8-1 (351-220) unranked by the polls or the committee but maybe they should take a look at the Rockets
11/8 at Ohio U. 7-2 (371-231)
11/15 at Bowling Green 2-7 (204-318)
11/24 Western Michigan 5-4 (318-256)
Comment: The Rockets have a couple of stiff tests left but could sneak in as the American Conference teams battle each other.

TY-D BOWL

Georgia Southern 0-8 (141-307)
11/9 at Appalachian State 5-3 (235-181)
11/18 vs. South Alabama 3-5 (183-206)
11/25 at Louisiana (formerly Louisiana-Lafayette, formerly SW Louisiana) 3-4 (212-285)
12/2 at Coastal Carolina 1-7 (188-303)
Comment: A long time FCS power with many national championships that will never win another because they went for the big bucks in FBS, the Eagles find themselves at 0-8. Maybe they can beat Coastal Carolina, another refugee from FCS.

Texas- El Paso 0-9 (103-326)
11/11 at North Texas 6-3 (323-326)
11/18 vs. Louisiana Tech 4-5 (260-245)
11/25 at Alabama-Birmingham 6-3 (296-230)
Comment: UTEP, (formerly Texas Western), has had 21 seasons since 1972 in which they won 2 or fewer games. So this is familiar territory for them.

On win teams: Baylor 1-8, Charlotte 1-8 Coastal Carolina 1-8, Kansas 1-8, Nevada-Reno 1-8, North Carolina 1-8, Oregon State 1-8, Rice 1-8, San Jose State 1-9
