One of the characteristics of a championship team and certainly of SU championship teams in the past is that they improve significantly over the course of the year. This year's team started out at a very high level but never really addressed several glaring deficiencies. They were good enough to win on Memorial Day but so were five or six other teams. SU had the bad luck to run into a team that had the ball skills and offensive depth to exploit their incompetent slide packages and below average team defense. Unfortunately, their opponent also made better decisions during the game and seemed more energetic and committed to victory. When you don't win it all and are as good as SU was and could have been there are always a number of small changes that might have made all the difference- not a good feeling for all of us who love SU lacrosse.

Defensive issues aside, the last 2 mins of the game were the reason the loss was so frustrating. The team had the capability to overwhelm JHU, but never played with a purpose until it was too late. The 3rd quarter was inexcusable - to get out-worked the way they did with everything on the line was just sad. In hindsight I wonder if going up 7-6 right before half gave them a false sense of security.
