True Detective, Season 2

I definitely am looking forward to seeing this one but still pretty bummed they didn't bring back WH and MM. Going to be a tough act to follow as they were awesome in season 1.

They are trying the follow up formula of "bring in new stars, but lots more this time". Hope it's as good as season 1, or they will have wasted a lot of $$$ on named actors.

The early rumors were that season 2 would also be in the South (Florida, IIRC), but at least some of the scenes in the promo are in SoCal

Was wondering about that too...

I don't think season one can be duplicated, it bordered on transcendent. I'd be happy with a "Better Call Saul" like follow up to "Breaking Bad."

First episode is getting mixed reviews, but personally I really liked it. It reminded me of a James Ellroy novel - three damaged and/or corrupt cops finding themselves thrown together around the dark edges & seedy underbelly of greater Los Angeles.

Now, I love Ellroy, but I recognize he's not everyone's cup of tea. My wife, for example, hated the first episode.

took me a while to realize that Riggins was the cop on the motorcycle munching on the Viagra before hitting it with his girlfriend. I thought it was good although a little hard to follow. I'll definitely re-watch before episode 2

As I said in the other thread, not sure what to think so far. Of course this show takes a while to unfold, so I'll give it some time and see where it goes.

It was a little hard to follow, especially with my wife constantly asking me what's going on...

Thoughts on the second episode? Not digging this one so far. I don't like the choice of the LA area - been done to death. One of the best things about the first TD was its setting in deep south Louisiana. The actors don't all seem very well cast at this point.

That said, I didn't see the plot twist at the end of the show coming. That's intriguing.

I am fine with it. I love the artsy-fartsy shots and the overall feel. I enjoyed the first season, but I think people went overboard with their praise. It was well acted and shot beautifully, but I think the storytelling resorted to a lot of dark-detective-drama cliches. Season 2 seems to fit that same mold, with which I am totally okay. It is a compelling show that I will continue to enjoy.

I did have trouble with Vince Vaughan initially, but I bought into him by the end of Episode 1. I like the cast.

I'm still having trouble with Vince Vaughn. The mumbling by some of the characters is really getting on my nerves. Rachel McAdams is my favorite role and acting job on there so far. It's okay, we'll see..

The sound is terrible. We have to have the volume way up higher than we normally do. And we don't have hearing issues.

Same here on both counts, and have a really good surround sound with more options than we'll ever use and tried them all for the settings. Never had a problem with any of the other HBO shows we've watched.

With the air on I need the volume up to 30 for True Detective and still can't make out the words. Usually it is 13-19.

Vince Vaughn is a terrible actor.

Some of the dialogue is clownishly bad.

I can't Collin Farrell seriously in anything.

McAdams and Tim Riggins aren't awful, but that's it.

Agree completely. After last night I'm about done. If it wasn't an HBO show and didn't have the names, we would've already stopped watching. The Vince Vaughn serious role experiment is over. He's horrible in that role. C'mon, I'm supposed to believe he's a big badass now ripping other bad guys teeth out with pliers? Last night was the worst episode so far in 2 seasons.

Tell her to lift her head up.

The wife fell asleep about 10 minutes into it last night. We both agree that we don't give a rip about any of the characters. She's done. I will give it one more episode and I'm out. And Vaughn is bad. Really bad.

Upon reflection, Season 2 makes "Better Call Saul" seem like a masterpiece. Ugh!

The Vaughn fight scene was ridiculous.

If his character had a bunch of henchman and he was master manipulator, cool.

But to suggest he has the pull he does because HE'S the badass was just dumb.

Any thoughts on the most recent episode? At least this one had some action. I still don't like Vince Vaughn's character or acting or lines though.

Same.
I liked it...clearly there's some intrigue with them being setup

But again Vaughn's character sucks

Vince Vaughn is still awful. Just absolutely terrible in this role.

The three cops are all cliches. The shoot out was cool I guess but I just don't care about what happens.

I'm also not into Ballers or the Brink. Disappointing having little to enjoy on HBO for the summer.
