The Upside
- It’s not easy when you aren’t playing well or with much confidence to get your act together and get back into the game – and then have to do it again when you fall behind again. Our team did it this night.
- Mintz and Starling continue to be one of the best backcourts in the league with 18 points apiece, even though Judah had none for the foul line. When He wasn’t getting the calls, he looked for better shots and went 8 for 16 with a couple of treys and had 8 assists. Starling, despite his tumble, hit four threes and continued to look like the guy we thought we’d recruited.
- Maliq Brown, whose scoring had dropped off had a good game with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.
- Matt Park said that Quadir Copeland was “on another planet. He wound up with 9 points 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals and, somehow, no turnovers. He led the charge during our comeback.
- Benny Williams filled up the stat sheet with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and an assist.
- Yes, Bell and Taylor started but the above five guys played 160 of the 200 minutes.

Net Points
This year I’m going to make things a bit easier on myself and just list the net points in each game after the Upside. Once a month I’ll do a deeper dive into the numbers rather than doing a “Net Points, etc.” post after every game. ‘Net’ points is the positives (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) minus the negatives, (missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and fouls committed).
Quadir Copeland game: 19NP in 28 minutes; season: 209NP in 448 minutes = 18.7NP/40m
JJ Starling game: 13NP in 36 minutes; season: 195NP in 716 minutes = 10.9NP/40m

The Downside
- Boston College isn’t a team you can play poorly against and still win anymore. When we beat them three weeks ago in the Dome, we held them to 22 first half points and shut out Quinton Post, (16.6ppg) and Jaeden Zachery, (11.5ppg) and fell behind in the second half before retaking command of the game and winning by ten. Tonight, Post had 9 points and 12 rebound while Zachery had 15 points and this time BC got the big halftime lead, extended it and forced us to get into overdrive to make a big comeback which came up short. They retook control and held off another late charge and we lost. Don’t look at the Eagles as an automatic W anymore.
- When you have to make a huge comeback like that, you need to take the lead. If you do, your tams will have the energy to finish it off. But if you roll that ball up the hill but lose your grip, then all the energy you expended in making a comeback will cost you and you will fall behind again. I’ve seen it happen many times and it happened tonight.
- Any game where Judah Mintz doesn’t make a free throw, we’re going to lose. He didn’t get the calls tonight and he missed the only two free throws he attempted. The team was a dismal 7 for 14 from the line. The last five games we’re 63.6% from the line.
- During the 0-21 stretch, (which should never happen against anyone, much less against BC), we were playing defense with our hands down. We weren’t playing hard enough for fatigue to be an issue yet. The team just seemed confused and depressed that things were going so poorly. And after we’d gotten back into it, nobody was on Claudell Harris, a 39% three point shooter, who made 5 of them and put the game out of reach again. The defense we played in that first half in the Dome was the best I’ve ever seen SU play. It was like getting mugged by a pickpocket. Letting BC do this to the same defense was really disappointing. We just couldn’t get stops when we needed them.
- The final couple of minutes might have been very different if the refs hadn’t totally blown that forecourt-backcourt no-call, followed by a Harris three.
- We also got out rebounded 27-37, which negated our 11-21 advantage in turnovers. BC gave us plenty of changes to come back but we didn’t take enough advantage of them. We bobbled too many balls at key points.
- Chris Bell after looking like a coming star vs. NC State, lost his clapper. He was 0 for 4, made a couple of free throws but his only other stats were two turnovers and a foul. NP: -5.
- Losing JJ Starling for a critical portion of the game hurt us. That cartwheel and crash might have impacted his shooting even when he came back.
- There’s not much to say about Justin Taylor except why is he still out there? He wasn’t recruited to be a non-scorer. “You don’t want to hurt his confidence.” What confidence? Isn’t it up to him to get it back?
- We just aren’t an NCAA team. We are an NIT team. I’d like to win that someday.
- Red in his presser blamed the 0 for 21 run on “a lack of communication”. Got anything for us, Lily?

The Downside
