The Upside
- That’s what 21 point leads are for.
- Against NC State we had a 55-40 halftime lead. The Wolfpack came back to take an 81-82 lead, a 26-42 run for them over 16:39. Fortunately, we put on the breaks and out-scored them 6-1 in that final 3:21. Against Notre Dame we had a 49-20 lead with 1:30 left in the first half. The Irish scored 9 unanswered points in the last 1:29 of the half. They came back to get within 86-83 with 1:07 left in the game, a 37-63 run in 20:23. Fortunately we just traded single baskets in that 1:07 and a length of the court 3 point attempt was short. Tonight we avoided a run at the end of the half and had a good start to the second half and had a 48-27 lead with 19:20 left in the game. The Hokies got within 69-62, a 21-35 run, when Coach Autry called a time-out with 7:16 left. After the time-out, Quadir Copeland found Maliq Brown for a dunk. Judah Mintz found Copeland for a lay-up and it was 73-62. The teams traded baskets until it was 80-69 after a Mintz three point play with 3:04 left. Copeland made a steal and passed to Brown for a dunk. Brown boarded a Pedulla miss and Starling made a lay-up to make it 84-69 with 54 seconds left and we could put the Maalox back in the cabinet.
- We’ve scored 87, 88 and 84 points in successive ACC games despite not having a strong perimeter game and having no inside scoring at all. (The pick and roll is not inside scoring.)
- This team beat our nemesis, Virginia, 74-41, eight days ago. Yeah, I know, there is no transitive property. Still…
- When Judah Mintz is looking to get fouled, he takes some really ugly shots that go in fi there’s a miracle. When Judah Mintz decides to score, he can get by anybody and score on really good shots. That’s what he did tonight, scoring 29 points on 10 for 17 field goals. He also was 8 for 8 from the foul line. He was in a slump at the line earlier this year but he’s 34 for 38 in the last five games. Still, free throws get you one points. Field goals get you two points. And I think he shoots free throws better when he makes field goals.
- JJ added 13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, a block and a steal. Early in the game, he looked like he was running at 45rpm while everybody else was 33 1/3. (To Gen X: that was a reference to vinal records.) He actually had to slow down to get in sync with his teammates.
- Maliq had his problems defensively but was a problem offensively, hitting 6 of 7 shots for 12 points, grabbing 8 rebounds and passing for 2 assists, which hugely underestimates his passing and the offense ran through him and he kept getting the ball to teammates who were open for shots or had space to maneuver.
- Quadir Copeland, as usual, upped the energy when he entered the game. He scored 12 points, had 4 assists in addition to 2 rebounds and a steal.
- For the 5th straight game, we were in the lead when Justin Taylor first came out of the game: 23-16 vs. UNC, 9-5 vs. Georgia Tech, 21-11 over NC State , 16-9 vs. Notre Dame and 15-13 in this game. He may not be the liability people think he is. And Red has found a way to get his contributions on the scoreboard: have him work the baseline where his strength allow him to get the ball into the basket. He also made a couple of free throws, which could get him muscle memory going again. He also had 6 rebounds, harkening back to early in the season when he was rebounding like a power forward.
- Kyle Cuffe hit a three but it wasn’t his most spectacular play. That would be a steal and a steak down the sideline, (he looked like a wide receiver doing a high wire act to stay in bounds) and beating three defenders to the basket for a lay-up.
- Hey! We actually out-rebounded somebody: 31-27. We were also +3 in turnovers.
- 19-10 against the 4th best schedule in the nation, (measured by opponent’s combined winning percentage) is a pretty good record. If we can beat Louisville or Clemson, we will have our first 20 win regular season in 10 years.

Net Points
This year I’m going to make things a bit easier on myself and just list the net points in each game after the Upside. Once a month I’ll do a deeper dive into the numbers rather than doing a “Net Points, etc.” post after every game. ‘Net’ points are the positives (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) minus the negatives, (missed field goals and free throws, turnovers and fouls committed).

The Downside
- It was the fourth straight game where we got out-scored in the second half while leads melted way. I guess we’re just not a second half team.
- Our defense was Swiss cheese in the second half. Tech, like us, is a team that passes and dribbles the ball well and there were just too many plays where we couldn’t prevent them from getting to the basket. Lynn Kidd and Mylyjani Poteat were 13 for 15 from the field. Maliq Brown had no answer for them. He may have been playing defense conservatively because of our lack of depth behind him. But doing a Peter Carey imitation to prevent us from having to use Peter Carey is not the answer.
- We are 14-2 at home 5-8 away from the Dome. Our last two games are away from the Dome. Smiles can turn into frowns pretty quickly.
- We found out one guy who will not be here next year. Mounir Hima, listed as junior but who must have already graduated participated in the “senior night” festivities. That opens up a scholarship for Donnie Freeman or Elijah Moore. But somebody else had to go, too. Who will it be?
