Waiters to the Heat

He's in the right place for an attitude curving and a spotlight.

That's it! You dared me:

MPG 28.3/32.5
PPG 12.8/13.6
APG 2.5/5.6
RPG 2.6/2.9
FG% 41.1/44.0
3FG% 33.4/37.3

I never said Dion was as good as Conley. I just said Conley was not $23M per year better. And he's not.

One is a PG, one is a 2G, so off the bat, Conley is more valuable becuase 2G's aren't worth dick anymore.

Look at advanced stats, Waiters is more inefficient with a higher usage. That's bad. Also has a career negative BPM and VORP. Conley has 10x the win shares Dion does, and despite Dion's strength being driving to the basket, Conley gets to the line more, and when he gets there he's 10% better than Waiters. Conley is the best 2nd tier PG there is in the NBA right now.

Also, Conley has not gotten into any crap with teammates in his career, which NBA FO's probably like.

Dion having a higher usage rate than Mike Conley kinda tells the whole story.

His agent, Gabjon, told him not to. Agreed though it's not much of an option.

You know what was a good player option from a player's point of view. Andrea Bargnani getting an $10-11M player option as part of a 5/50 deal he signed with the Raptors. The 5 years of terror, including the player option, ended with the Knicks. Of course Bargnani was going to take his player option.

Bryan Colangelo could be so bad at times especially when it came to decisions regarding his Italian "Love Child". He had not earned that contract based on his poor play on the court with glaring weaknesses and lack of motivation, but OK some thought he had potential. If you are going to give a large contract that will only have value if the player changes a lot, you NEVER give the person a player option at the end.
a) If the player never reaches his potential, you get stuck with the bad value at the end.
b) If the player reaches his potential, he leaves you hanging. So if the player improves you lose out a year he may actually be worth it.

A young player who has played to an unsatisfactory level like Bargnani at that point should have never had the leverage to get a $10M player option in his deal ( about $18M today). GM 101.

Sometimes player options are the kicker that needs to be in place for established players. That is understandable.

not an agent a scout. Everything is always great until the money gets involved....

Good article from local Miami paper on Dion's decision and comments from Pat Riley -

Dion Waiters, Pat Riley say Heat agreement about more than money

It makes sense, for a few million anyway. It certainly seems that he could have at least attracted interest from one of the many teams holding the more lucrative 1/6 million MLE exception, but his decision came down to fit instead of a few million dollars.

Very few teams have the MLE though, no? most everyone was under the cap when the summer began
