EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern goalkeeper Bridget Bianco made a save with 1:19 remaining on a shot by junior Kelly Cross to secure No. 7/6 Northwestern's 11-10 victory against No. 5/5 Syracuse on Saturday, Mar. 22. The loss snaps the Orange's three-game winning streak.

No. Every team has figured out that they can double her every time she gets the ball and effectively take her out of the game. Not for the first time, she was held to ZERO shots today. Unfortunately, SU doesn't have another monster offensive threat to go to. Last year, they had Alyssa Murray would would smoke any team who tried this. This year, not so much.

Northwestern Hands Syracuse 11-10 Decision (IL)

Syracuse coach Gary Gait has, over the years, brought to Northwestern’s Lakeside Field an impressive bevy of talent, led by the likes of Katie Rowan, Michelle Tumolo, and Kayla Treanor, but he has never been able to come away with a win. On a cold, blustery afternoon by the lake, history held form, as Northwestern maintained a slim lead through the second half and left the field with an 11-10 victory. It was a tight contest between two teams – young, energetic, and mistake-prone – that reached last year’s Final Four, suffered significant graduation losses, and are still finding their feet in the new season.

The trajectory of Syracuse’s season has been measured to a large extent by how well the Orange have compensated for opposing teams’ efforts to contain Treanor, arguably the most exciting one-on-one player in the game. Some teams have tried faceguarding her, with varying levels of success, but Northwestern decided to play her straight up, with timely help from double teams. Jess Carroll, a senior who has shown bursts of athletic versatility as a midfielder, was given the assignment and she played the game of her career. Treanor never really got close to the net, took no shots, and exited with an empty ledger. Halle Majorana and Kelly Cross, major alternatives on offense, each contributed three goals, but it was not enough...
