WML Project: Duke Snider and Sal Maglie

9/5/54 Sal Maglie & Duke Snider WML had a special “double chair” for pairs of mystery guests so they could sit close to each other and be in the same frame. Sal was still with the Giants at that time so watching him get “cozy” with Duke Snider, whom he’d brushed back so often, is funny to look at. The Dodgers beat the Giants that day, (7-4), but the Giants would win the pennant- and the World Series. Maglie had beaten the Dodgers by the same score two days before, (Friday: WML was a Sunday night show), with Snider going 1 for 5.


They come on at the 17 minute mark. They alternate responding just to make it more confusing.

Sal was back on the show two years later, on 10/7/56, the day before Don Larson’s perfect game-Maglie was the opposing pitcher and gave up only 2 runs himself. Phil Rizzuto is on the panel.


Sal is the first guest. I love it when Phil asks "Is it the type of services I could enjoy?" and "Do people feel better after they've come to you?"

A week later, they had on Charley Robertson, who had pitched the last perfect game in the major leagues before Don Larson:

The Duke soloed on WML after the team moved to Los Angeles, (but before they had played any games): 1/12/58. Laraine Day, Leo Durocher’s wife, calls his team the Brooklyn Dodgers. John Daly sadly corrects her but says they haven’t found a place to play yet. Duke is hobbled with a knee injury.
