Cathedral HS in Erie is like the Holy Grail for SU football. We have tried to recruit a bunch of players from there in recent years without success. Great program. Would be great if this helps open that school up to Syracuse.

From what I have read, he is considered really smart, and is a well respected X's and O's guy. Has experience coaching all off the place, so he bring a lot of flexibility. Kaufman was our primary special teams coach so his extensive experience in special teams is a really good fit for us.

Looks like a good recruiter. Recruited a couple of kids from Plainville East in NJ for Ball State. Also, one of Kaufman's primary recruiting areas was WNY. If you look at Edinboro's just signed recruiting class for 2017, it had 21 players. Of those 21, 10 were from Western NY.

I suspect he will be assigned to this area and might be helpful recruiting it. WNY has produced a lot of BCS level players in recent years, so I think this is very good news.

Dino seemed to go for teaching over recruiting acumen in these latest two moves. Let's hope everyone can pick up the slack.

Also apparently has an existing relationship with CBA.

Seems smart, organized, HC experience, knowledge of a recruiting hotbed! Great hire!

How is that kind of turnaround even possible?
More about Lustig, Great Get by Dino! :)

Justin Lustig Named D2Football.com Coach of the Year

LIBERTY, Mo. – Edinboro University first-year head coach Justin Lustig collected another award today as the D2Football.com Division II All-American Team was released. Lustig was selected the D2Football.com Division II Coach of the Year.

This marks the latest of several awards Lustig has received after leading Edinboro to the largest turnaround in Division II history. He was previously selected the Don Hansen Football Gazette Super Region One Co-Coach of the Year, along with being honored as the PSAC West Coach of the Year.

"I'm very honored to receive the award," noted Lustig. "However, this award isn't just about me. This is a tribute to our entire staff, who did tremendous job in a short period of time. It also honors our players, who bought into what we wanted to do and believed in our system."

Lustig was the architect of a record-breaking turnaround in 2016. Hired in January, the former Ball State assistant took an 0-11 team in 2015 that was picked to finish eighth in the Western Division coaches' preseason poll, and led it to a 9-2 finish. The nine wins tied the school record for wins in a season.

The Fighting Scots appeared in the AFCA Division II Coaches' Poll for the first time since 2011, and finished seventh in the final Super Region One rankings. Edinboro upset PSAC East preseason favorite West Chester, 54-51 in overtime. That was one of five wins in which the Fighting Scots rallied in the fourth quarter or overtime. The lone losses came to NCAA playoff entrants Indiana(Pa.) and California(Pa.).

Lustig relied on a high-powered offense that scored 40-or-more points in a school-record seven games, with two games of 60-or-more points, along with an opportunistic defense. Edinboro averaged 41.5 ppg., good for third in the PSAC and 12th in Division II.

That's right in the Doug Marone wheelhouse, right there. Put teachers on your staff.

This is a monster upgrade in my opinion

Yes, Ediboro has been very active in Rochester lately. They have 5 kids on the team. They have 6 more coming in from Rochester in 2017. Again, great hire. Im excited to see how well he recruits PA and NY for Cuse.

Does anybody know what area Mike Hart was responsible for recruiting? I can't remember.

Man, DII must pay pennies if you're willing to step down from a head coach job to a D1 position coach job. Not criticizing the pick, just curious.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's being paid the same or incrementally less to take this position. Doesn't mean it's true, but, I bet it's likely.

Some dudes just wanna coach in the big time. I'd give up the future I built in a heart beat in order to stand on a P5 sideline coachin' ball.

Great hire; love his background and experience.
Hope his experience in Pennsylvania helps us recruit well there.

I am sure he's actively recruiting PA and has plenty of established relationships with many HS coaches, just the players they will be discussing in the future will be of a different talent level. Relationships are relationships, issue will be who said HS coach have relationships with at the BCS level.. Now he's competing with the big boys

personally, I hope he teaches to kick-off through the end zone. have been burned way too many times with coverage/out of bounds when we try to "pin" the ball in corner.
I would love to see SU recruit a strong legged kicker who can reliably boom the ball through the endzone.

Don't care if that is all he ever does. Having that weapon would dramatically improve field position. The ACC has a lot of great return guys. Let's take them out of play, at least for kickoffs. So many schollies go unused...it should be easy to justify.
