Syracuse Names Men's Lacrosse Head Coaching Position over Simmons Jr.

While the impact that National Lacrosse Hall of Fame coach Roy Simmons Jr. made at Syracuse University will forever be remembered, it's his name that will now be attached to the position he held for 28 years.

Syracuse's men's lacrosse head coaching position will now be called 'The Roy D. Simmons Jr. Head Men's Lacrosse Coach,' with Saturday's statue dedication serving as the culmination of a fundraising campaign to endow the position. Brett Jefferson '88 established the Men's Lacrosse Coaches Endowment to name the head coaching position after Roy Simmons Jr.

This endowment allows the Orange to recruit and retain the best coaches in the country and ensure that SU continues as the gold standard of lacrosse programs.

I like it. Keep the Simmons name forever with the program and guarantees we will never have to cut lacrosse. Nice to have the funds every year to run the program. Money to athletics is a good thing and if is the way to do it so be it. Go thanks Brett!

I'm of two minds on this (you're never alone with a schizophrenic). Love the endowment, but it will also only serve to highlight any time that we don't have a coach of Simmons' caliber, which will likely be almost all of the time. I can see the questions: "Does he deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Roy Simmons, Jr.?"

It's a way for well-heeled boosters to help support their favorite program. Covering the coach's salary allows funding to be diverted to other purposes, most especially recruiting.

Check out Stanford. Or Ohio St. I think they endow most, if not all, of their head coaching positions. Imagine how much money has to be raised to endow Urban Meyer's salary.
