Can’t believe how fast the team was and loud the place was.

Classic college football theme from ESPN.
The current SEC on CBS crew on the call.
I was a youngster traveling in for this game.
Remember the disappointment of losing it as we had NC aspirations that year.
If we won this game it would have been 1 vs. 2 against Miami later in the year.

I think that was the game that prompted P to switch one of our reserve o-lineman to the d-line (I forget his name). I remember it going quite a ways to shoring up the defense that year.

I hated this game. Retrospectively I hate it for the reasons you mentioned, big season implications, but also because this was my freshman year, and this was the first game I bet on as a Syracuse University student. Ugh. Made me want to transfer to the University of Syracuse, but they also lost to THE State University of Ohio.

Ohio State spent the entire offseason thinking about our Hall of Fame bowl win. They really beat us up this game. And I think we were a little emotionally spent from the win over Texas the week before.

I just remember being impressed with the Ohio State crowd. They had a parade down Marshall Street! My lasting memory of the game was the noise their fans made in the Dome as their team was coming off the field at halftime, up 21-6 I believe. Biggest, loudest away crowd I had seen at the Dome until Tennessee came rolling thru town in 1998.

We recovered nicely that year. One of our best teams ever.

I remember Brian Coleman. I’m not sure he’s the guy. I remember him always playing DT. He was a strong kid. One arm tackles. I also remember him being a bit injury prone.

It was definitely Coleman, who was strong, had a shaved head and lots of tattoos.

Coleman: “In the beginning years, I used to tell people I felt like a step child. A couple of us defensive linemen in (Orgeron’s) first freshman class felt like he didn’t even want us. He didn’t even recruit us. He got stuck with us and he hates us. Even in those beginning years, [Orgeron] even moved me to offensive line after my first year at Syracuse working with him. Ultimately, I was able to convince him to take me back on the defensive line and finish my career there.

Coleman wasn't on the roster all the way back in 1992 though.

I remember Coleman used to bring his own 12 pack of Iron City to 44's.

I didn’t even look at dates, but I know for sure Coleman was playing OL early and got moved to DL, where he thrived and became a key part of the defense the test of his career.

NJCuse97 might be right and there is another player with a similar history to Coleman. If so, sorry for the correction.

I believe James Spencer was made a DL starter early that season.

He was a big, lean player.

And he played well.

I do not recall him being an OL, but he was certainly built like a OT.

Spence was huge! Nice guy too. I had a walk on RB on my floor that year. He used to hang with Spence.

Osu seemed more excited for the game than Su was. I remember Corey Stringer high stepping off of the field after they had shoved the ball down our throats on a very impressive scoring drive. I don't think I've ever seen another OT to do that. Robert Smith was also very impressive.

That was not the Louisville of today. They were Rutgersesque then
Schnelengber was the coach and they went to the Fieta Bowl the next year. Still a tough road game that went down to the wire, certainly no gimme.

Not terrible, but Fiesta was the year before and that was because everyone else boycotted the state of Arizona in protest to their not recognizing MLK Jr. day. They wouldn’t have been there if not for that. Year after, 1993 was the Liberty. You’re right ultimately, they were better than I remembered, but not of Texas and OSU caliber.

I think the 1992 team was better than the 1987 team.

We had big boy talent that year. the diff is 87 was a magical year, return to greatness. the 1992 team had expectations and but for a few plays was set up to play Miami 1 vs 2 end of year. They had a chance to win it all. 87 had no shot with their schedule in hindsight.

I remember us running the nearside option over and over again into the waiting arms of Ohio State players who were ready for us. Our guys got hit so much they were almost punch-drunk by the end of the game. This was after we'd beaten them in the Hall of Fame Bowl 9 months before by throwing for over 300 yards.
