So -- where might Tyus Battle have gotten drafted if he'd stayed in the draft?

I think his public image was tarnished by pundits with a superficial grasp of Battle's year. This was a kid who had to play every minute of every game. The same people think that zone defense is an automatic strike against individual defensive ability - prejudice without respect for nuance.

Late 1st/Early 2nd.

Not sure where Tyus would have gone, but I can say with confidence Oshae would have gone #27 to the Celtics

Donte Divincenzo says hi.

I think NBA Scouts would disagree.

At least 90% of their game scouting is done before the NCAA tourney (typically conference games that are planned for particular matchups). They then rely heavily on combine results. Just because fans didn't realize Donte was a top 20 talent until March, does not mean he was not regarded highly or scouted highly before the tournament.

It is simply too hard and risky to schedule scouting trips in the tourney. You risk missing players. Also many games in the first weekend have limited scouting value. And then a team is done.

There are possibly a few exceptions, but in general it's not likely going to jump you up significantly.

grayson allen sort of proved that concept that you cant improve your stock between 2nd and 3rd year sort of bs. his value was up..then down, and then up again.

Tyus is an excellent college player, but watching the draft and seeing the guards who were drafted, they were either elite shooters, extremely versatile, or able to play multiple positions. Tyus really doesn’t fit into any of those, I think he will be drafted next season with a weaker draft and he was probably a lottery pick in the late 90s, but he was late 2nd round or not drafted the other night.

He was rated higher than some of the guards drafted.

McCoy from UNLV was rated higher than some guys at his position and averaged a double double as a freshman and didn’t get drafted.

I think that this is true in most cases, but I think there are definitely cases that buck the trend, including (I think) Divincenzo. The draft express guys, now at ESPN, are pretty plugged in, and I doubt (I haven't looked) that he was in any mock draft rated any higher than a late second rounder before the tournament at all--or even expected to be drafted at all for that matter. Now maybe he would have raised his stock at the combine afterward, or maybe he doesn't even declare and get invited, but I just don't buy that players can't raise their stock in the tournament. If that was true, the combine, aside from the measurements and athletic testing wouldn't move the needle either.

Why are the Celtics passing on one of the better big man talents of the last few drafts to take a guy that plays a position where they are already loaded? Williams goes top 10 if he comes out last year. Even if he was a late 1st round pick of the C's which stars minutes is he taking Hayward or Tatums?

Tyus wasn't a combine sweetheart like Robinson or Heurter.

Very high probability he ends up those lists with Newman, Alkins, Treir, and Duval. 4 guys at his position who could have been ranked higher than him. Very glad he made the right call and can enter the upcoming season high on draft boards and with a lot of attention.

Meh. He went mid-late first and thats likely where he goes each of the last 4 drafts. Remember has a certain intangible the Maryland kid also has that NBA teams still covet to fill out their benches.

Even last year he still likely sneaks into the first and if not hes one of the first 5 names called in the second when his stock was supposedly 'lower.'

He shot 36 percent from 2 and 33 percent chance from 3. He wasn’t getting drafted at all.

Hard to say. Probably undrafted but it seems to show how important the combine is. Those wings and guards flashed there who were drafted in the first round.

Nah, its just like recruiting. If the mocks aren't listing a guy and the fans don't know about him, no one does.

It always strikes me as funny that people don't realize that both the scouting services and the mock drafts are really looking at things from the fan side of the fence. If an NBA team identifies Donte DiVincenzo as a guy that they think has first round potential, what possible benefit is it to them to share that determination with the other 30 franchises?

Similar with a high school recruit. If SU identifies Brycen Gooden or Robert Braswell as a guy that they think can help and are deserving of a scholarship, what benefit is it to us for them to get identified by the scouting services as 4 star or 5 star guys.

They make the evaluations based on their own judgments having very little to do with what we see, or when we see it.
