Jim Boeheim is synonymous with Syracuse basketball. Who could succeed him when the time comes?

If we don't go internally, I love the idea of Chris Collins if he doesn't get the Duke job. He's done a good job at Northwestern (taken them to their first NCAA appearance in their history), and he is an amazingly hard worker. I got to know Chris pretty well during the 2008 and 2012 Olympics where he did much of the heavy lifting for Coach K. Personality-wise, he is very similar to Mike Hopkins (and they are close friends).
That would be a good choice.

Could you see any scenario in the future where Mike Hopkins could return home to Syracuse?

I can't imagine we'll hire a Duke guy as the successor to the king.

I have always assumed it's Gerry's to lose at this point. I suspect the Hopkins train has left the station. I get the impression he's very happy, and compensated, in Puget Sound.

Gerry is unprepared for a job this big. Let him go coach Siena to a couple NCAA tournaments first and win a game in the tournament, and then we can start to talk about it.

How is he any different than Hopkins when the first plan was in place where he would take over? I know he was 10 years older but sans any HC experience.

I'm not saying i'm in favor of this but I feel like it's what Boeheim will want and my assumption is he'll have a major say in it.

Hop was lead recruiter for many years and my understanding is he was involved in a lot of the day to day running of the program also.

It's not. But count me among those who would have preferred we hire someone with head coaching experience when Boeheim eventually retires.

SU will promote from within, (and I would favor Autry). If that guy fails, that's when you call in the search firm.

Why do you need a search firm to figure out what college basketball coaches are good coaches? If the AD can't figure that out he's not qualified to be an AD.

Good lord. Search firms are a waste of money

OK. What i was trying to say is that we promote from within first and if that doesn't work, look outside the program, (whether we use a search firm or not).

just stop. SU is not St Bona. Y'all wanted one of the top-rated head coaching assistants in the country to go out and prove himself worthy of this gig, but now a proven coaching resume doesn't matter?

This is getting silly. So all I have to do is reel in a couple top-100 recruits and my name will be in consideration?

If your theory is true and JB wants to pull a Calhoun and force the university's hand - then Wildhack should fire him immediately.
If any staff member other than Red is interviewed it is a joke.

I guess the joke will be on you.

I mean, if those guys are on the same staff when the time comes (and I believe that's unlikely), Autry would be put in the position of saying "OK, you graduated from college 12 years after I did, I have a lot more experience than you, and I'm technically above you right now (associate head coach vs. assistant), and you're leapfrogging me to take the top job?"

If that hypothetical came to pass, KCSU and Autry wouldn't be the only people scratching their heads.

Probably moot, since Autry's on the first plane out of here when he gets a decent head coaching job offer in the next two years (though we've been saying that for at least two years). But as things stand today, he's got a stronger resume than any other assistant on staff.

What's funny is that Allen Griffin has been in coaching longer than Red because of Autry's long overseas playing career.

Other than being JBs favorite what has Gerry or for that matter Red or Grif done to take over the direction of this program? I hope we look outside or offer Hop the world to come back. Still cant believe how that went down.

I was commenting on an interview.

I hope we don't use a search firm. Search firms brought Nancy Cantor, Daryl Gross and Greg Robinson to SU. Much better not to use a search firm ... if you can hire a known quality ... such as SU did with John Wildhack.

Didn’t a search firm “find” John?
