Class of 2018 Griffin Gelinas (CT), Attack, Flipped to Michigan

I have no idea where he is going to end up but two thoughts.

1. He decommited from us for a reason, has that reason or reasons been cleared up? Does Magnan his friend being on the roster push him back here?

2. If he was to end up back here that would be a pretty big coup especially with the 2020 decommits and the loss of the top 2019 guy to Michigan coincidentally. I would hope we have at least reached out.

While Chris makes a good point about there being nothing out there about a transfer it seems unlikely Lacrosse Commits (whoever is running that) picked those names out of a hat and just randomly decided to list them as transfers. Forkin does have a year of eligibility left I believe so I guess he could theoretically transfer somewhere.

He was actually here last fall for practice but then disappeared again in the Spring.
Forkin rejoined the team in 2017 but was injured and ended up having surgery. Coming out of high school IL had him ranked as the 20th best incoming freshman (for what it's worth).

I think he actually came back in 2016 but got hurt in either fall ball or early that following spring. I was pretty high on Forkin coming out of HS and was disappointed when he transferred. Was thrilled when he transferred back in as that is extremely rare at this level but unfortunately he was never able to put it all together and get back on the field.

Pass, we have better young attackman already here

IF Gelinas were to transfer now I imagine he'd redshirt. I can't say who he is better than until they suit up, but he'd be competing with the following currently on the roster projecting forward to next season: Rehfuss (sr.), Seebold (jr.), Cook (so.), Berkman (so.) and Basil (so.). Are the spots sowed up? From a depth perspective, I think you need to rely on 4 attackmen. I agree with JeremyCuse: he'd essentially be a 2019 recruit who could soften the blow from our 2020 attack decommits.

My take is you fill in the 2020 class by replenishing with 2020's recruits not a 18' who might redshirt. Some cite that the size of the roster is a deterrent to recruiting, a perspective that I agree with. You always make room for a n impact player such as Austin Staats or Ierlan but more is not necessarily better and several top programs carry a roster in mid 40's not mid 50's. Staff will decide on any transfers but adding a depth player likely means cutting a depth player so it's also to me a matter of allegiance to committed players, both present and incoming. As far as attack depth now and going forward , there is also Nelson who impressed in fall , three 19 attackman coming next year and a few mids such as Lauder who can shift down.

Good point. I think roster size is something many have over looked for the decommits. Not necessarily for the 20's but if you're a 19 and you see the high ranked mids who will be on the 2nd or 3rd line as sophs that would give me pause. Starting midfield is 2 sophs and a redshirt soph. tough to crack that in the next 3 years. Quinn who was a pretty high end recruit may never start and not for lack of skill.

I don't think we are in the position to say "no thanks" to a highly rated recruit, especially an attackman (the very recent history at this spot is not very good). I think he would be a welcome addition, though there is no other indication that he would end up at Syracuse other than he decommitted, which is not a strong indicator to me. So I don't know if that means he is a more or less likely to end up as a member of the Orange. I do hear the complaints about roster size, for sure. But I don't think that a player like Gelinas is the type we say no to.

I think the leaders in the club house to be future starting attackmen would be Cook and Seebold and the rest is a tossup to me. If Gelinas had come in with the rest of the freshmen I feel like he would be a notch below Cook in terms of our expectations, but still ranked pretty highly. I would be excited if it came out he had changed his mind to come to Syracuse.

Welcome every player ! I don’t care if you decommit. If you recommit your good with me. Attack is definitely an area of need. We may have grabbed a last minute free agent.

Such as whom?

Where is the evidence that Gelinas is transferring to anywhere let alone SU? I don't understand the idea that excellent high school players recruited by SU would be deterred by a 50 instead of a 40 team population. Zawada would have competed for an attack spot immediately. To reach the level of excellence in high school, these guys must have enough self confidence to take on any competition. I don't buy this argument as any more than a rationalization or pretext for de-commitals. Gelinas sounds like wishful thinking. Forkin you've got to be kidding. He must be 35 years old. Long gone. There is no messiah on the horizon.

Only evidence that he may transfer is his name disappearing from the online roster

That may be correct if SU is your dream school but clearly that isn't the case for these guys. Call it what you want. Playing time prospects, better academics, better fit, better weather, better connection w coaches, more sucking up on recruiting visits. It could be anything but unless you're talking to the players themselves we have no idea. I know coaches counsel their kids on the prospects of winning, playing time and all the factors above.

Just so you know all of the prominent members of the lax twitter world have zero trust in "Lacrosse Commits." They apparently post weird cryptic tweets that are unconfirmed by anyone else and nobody knows the identity of who runs the account.

According to the Michigan directory, both Gelinas and Johnston are listed. So unless they plan on transferring over the winter semester then it's probably a goof updating the roster. Forkin isn't that far of a stretch if he has any time left, though he's still listed in the directory as well. West is listed in Lehighs directory though Wellford doesn't show in Virginias. And Towson requires an account to use their directory.

This is the account that first knew about Ierlan looking to transfer though. I think they have an inside ear on some things but that tweet was swing and a miss, probably just looking through updated rosters and claiming transfers if names aren't there.

West is not at Lehigh and Id be leery of any who can't make it through a single semester after fall ball.
