According to WVU senior associate athletics director Matt Wells, the school has sold about 3,500 tickets for the game against Syracuse on Dec. 28. That total includes tickets reserved for The Pride of West Virginia marching band and players’ families.
West Virginia was allotted 8,000 tickets to sell for the game, putting the school at just 44 percent sales. Syracuse has sold over 70 percent of its allotment for the game – at least 5,600 tickets — according to Orange athletics director John Wildhack.

This is a good sign but generally more of the same. The fans seem to be about as in to this game as its star players are.

Refresh my memory. The cost associated unsold allotment is borne by the University, or does the ACC cover it in some way?

I believe that those numbers include tickets for band members and players families too. WVU in reality hasn’t sold many tickets then,

IIRC teams are on the hook financially for about half the tickets, The ACC covers the other half. If my memory is true on that fact we should be in good shape since our mandatory bowl allotment is 8000 tickets.

FYI if we get the Gator Bowl in the future their allotment is probably 8000 too. That was the figure I read for 2016.

I think this is going to be the norm when players all around the country are sitting out bowl games.

Not that I’m for or against that, just acknowledging that I’m less intrigued with the game absent Grier playing, so I can only imagine what their own fans feel.

School - the ACC *might* cover *some* of it, but really, the school eats it.

Does ACC still evenly distribute revenue from bowls? I thought that may have been modified a few years ago at the behest of Florida State.

It’s still even.

And FSU’s issue was with the conference’s travel stipend after they sent a crazy number of people to the bowl.

Well all the schools collectively eat it.

The school eats it, or at least a huge chunk of it. That system is intentional. It strengthens the incentive to sell more tickets, thereby making more money for everyone. It’s based on the idea that the school is better at selling to it’s die hard fans than any other organization.

I imagine there will be a decent showing from the snow birds in Florida and those looking for a last minute extended weekend trip. Those who are going didn’t buy thru WVU.. those are usually the worst seats.

Let’s be honest WVU, their players and their fan base don’t really seem to be into this game. I get the same feeling as when we played them in the PinStripe Bowl. I’m calling it now, they come out flat, we roll and beat them by double digits. Head to your bookie and take Cuse and the points.

So basically WVU fans are lazy and lame, and their program lacks focus and discipline.

Nope. WV fans just had high expectation this year. They thought they had a good shot to make top 4 / CFP.
