Goodine...

not sure how you can claim he’s maxed out his ability when 10 year nba vets can improve their games .. I recall Jason Kidd all of a sudden being able to shoot 3’s well into his nba career
What can he really showcase next year that he hasn’t done so far? He’s already carrying this team on his back. His handle is much stronger... he’s scoring at all levels. If he was a couple of inches taller and/or had elite athleticism to go with his skill set he’d be a top 5 pick. As is he’s not getting taller or faster or quicker. He’s only getting older and that’s the biggest incentive to declare. The NBA has a huge age bias.

maybe he gets insurance and decides to forgo a year’s salary but it’s highly unlikely.

I'm not sure the problem is that he's "maxed out" his ability, but teams certainly want to see potential and I don't think there's a great argument for going with a guy that's 22 over a guy that's 18 in terms of potential and the ability to mold them.

Some additional factors that come into play here are that Hughes probably graduates, so he could be done with school and may not want to pursue another degree. Teams also look at the years that they will control a player. Teams will look at Hughes and think that he might be 3-4 years older at the end of his second contract than someone they grab after their freshman season. It might not seem big, but when you're talking about millions of dollars teams want as many prime seasons as possible.

id rather have a guy who is going to be a supportive / bench player at ages 24-27 then someone at 19-22. i mean the guy who is 19 is going to be up for a new contract by the time they are useful.

I think to keep his confidence up he should play the 2 for a while until he feels more comfortable playing at an ACC level. Once he starts to take off, which from what I see, would be halfway through his Soph year to beginning Junior years and then I'd flip him around the 1/2/3 and see where he flourishes, which I believe is at 2 or 1. Jim likes playing 7 so being versatile would be to his advantage.

He won't have NPOY potential. He needs to be on a top 15 team to get that kind of publicity.

Listen I hear ya - other teams find a way to get their players to stay. For some reason, it just doesn't happen here.
Eli reminds me of buddy hield to an extent. Hield came back his senior year after being projected late first/second the year before and ended up being drafted 6. He continued to develop his game every year and it payed off.

A text from the Dome during early warmups:

Goodine is athletic as hell. He’s the best dunker on the team. His head is on the rim.

And he doesn't miss outside.

We could be top 15 next year with Hughes back. We’d have everybody back, with lots of guys with room to make big jumps in their games(QG, Goodine, Edwards), and other veterans who will play at a higher level more consistently(Buddy, Marek, Joe)...and Sidibe who I’m not really sure which of those two groups to put him in at this point, but having a senior center with lots of experience will be a good thing. That’s a potentially strong team...with Hughes.

Brogdon and Brunson are great recent examples of guys like that. Hindsight is showing they should’ve been top 10-20 picks. Trends don’t last forever. Maybe the swing for the fences trend hoping every 6’10 skinny 18 year old that can walk and chew gum is the next Garnett will die down.

If we finish with above 20 wins and he returns along with Carey staying in Cuse we will be a top 15 team at this rate
Carey is not staying. He is a third guard here at best. Doesn't seem like he would accept or excel in that role.

He’s looked great last 2 games albeit small sample size.

Honestly you don’t need to be nostradamus to see that we are going to be in the Southerland/BJ situation with him wishing we had this year back and he was redshirted. If it’s not too late and Washington can go I’d think about going that route.

In this case, Eli has pretty much maxed out his ability. He made a big improvement this year, but there's not much more he can do to sell himself. The guys that came back were told they had a chance to improve their draft stock if they worked on a few things.

Maybe gbo can lend Etienne for the weekend and have him talk to Eli.

One more year of improving his ball handling would be huge for Eli. The difference from last year is very noticeable. He also wasn’t a good iso player and didn’t shoot off the dribble as well. I also think next year Eli gets the Buddy Hield type treatment and hype. NBA likes seniors and freshmen most it seems.

Once he played, it's too late. After appearing in a game, you can get a redshirt only due to injury, and then only if you play no more than 30% of your team's games. Different from football.

Disagree. He’s a natural scorer and could excel in an off the ball role. Think he may be a welcomed stay if Hughes leaves.

He can improve his ball handling even more if he was in the NBA and was practicing every day.

If he's projected in the draft, he should leave.

Hmm...kinda think getting the chance to do it in games matters here. If he’s not playing, or is not used in that role much, that’s not helping.

Agreed. Whose to say he’s maxed out? He improved a TON from last year to this year. To me, a guy is “maxed out” when he’s not getting noticeably better anymore. I don’t think most 21-22 year olds are “maxed out”. Only the ones who developed super early and are limited physically “max out” that early, IMO.

But he’s not projected. Most of our guys who have been fortunate to get drafted higher than they probably should have did so because they were part of a great high profile Syracuse team either regular season or postseason like Mal and Lydon. This year is neither (for now) I don’t know I like my Heild comp that guy is pumping gas if he left after his Jr year he needed the pub of being a star returning season to get teams focusing on him.

If we get hot and make the Final Four then sure.

This is so far off. His handle is NBA ready. He is worlds better than the last 5 or 6 that left early here. Thee worst possible thing a player can do when they are good enough to leave is stay another year. It stinks...I hate it... but that’s the lousy basketball world we live in now. Where did you get that the NBA likes seniors?

Of course, SYR would like him to stay but it is JC's decision and he sees writing on wall, not going to play much behind Buddy and Joe

Hey, take this to the Hughes thread!

that’s pretty much exactly why he probably should transfer. Buddy will play 35+ a night until he graduates. JG3 will be a 4-year starter who’s shooting will keep him in the court, no matter how bad his D is or how careless he is offensively. He’ll get 30+ a night.

So where does that leave Carey and Goodine? Both have to understand they aren’t likely to play double digit minutes per game any time soon. Will Goodine want to wait until 2022 to geT a chance to start.

I have never said this about an SU player, but the way this team is constructed and knowing how JB loves his starters, if I were Goodine I would transfer. He’s far too good an all around player to get spot minutes for the next 2 seasons after this.

I don't think he should transfer
I would like to see him drive the ball in game.
If he can get in the lane and create he will play.

He’s gonna be #6 guard behind Kadary Brycen and HW. Come on.

Carey is gone. Athletic, can't shoot not great at finishing around the rim. , loose handle. Very good on defense. Another Kaleb Joseph. May be a very good player as he gets more experience but we have three very good guards and one coming in. No place at the Inn.
