2023 East Coast Rosters and Where Players Call Home

What I like about 100 miles is that it’s pretty reflective of what kind of area each school is in. It’s not perfect, of course. If you go by state boundary, that gives Florida State credit for a lot of its players coming from Miami. (It currently has many.) Miami is about the same number of...

2023 East Coast Rosters and Where Players Call Home

Are you incapable of understanding nuance? First of all, I say in my initial post "100 miles is arbitrary" because you can't run Excel calculations saying "vibes", so I picked a number that made sense to me and ran it by non-Cuse football friends to get a sense of what their opinion would be...

2023 East Coast Rosters and Where Players Call Home

    1) What does pro sports have to do with anything in this conversation, other than it makes people not care about college sports and therefore have little awareness about various nuances regarding different teams? 2) "Most schools with a roster over 50% from 300+ miles faired worse than those...

2023 East Coast Rosters and Where Players Call Home

"Syracuse has to do this but other schools don't." You saying that doesn't convince me I'm "losing anything." My data shows there isn't a single approach that coaches follow or need to follow, especially when you arbitrarily start saying "well these schools don't need to because of X, Y, or Z."...

2023 East Coast Rosters and Where Players Call Home

Define "Back Yard." To me, "Back Yard" is go up to 50 people who follow college football and most will tell you their team is Syracuse. That is, the school is top of mind among the locals. That's where the "local" advantage comes from - a lifelong desire to play for the "local" school because a...

2023 East Coast Rosters and Where Players Call Home

Again, the numbers suggest there’s no connection between where your players come from and winning. This is not an instruction guide for “Syracuse should go here to recruit and they’ll replicate the performance of school X.” UNC and NC State each have ~35 local players. They don’t seem to look...

2023 East Coast Rosters and Where Players Call Home

It was raised on another thread that all teams start roster construction and get specific skill sets from outside areas. It got me thinking - is this true? Is there a standard template for how to build a team? I aggregated 2023 rosters - including name, position, and hometown - for all ACC...

    Did I hear Sala correctly

I'd assume the structure of the terracing is borderline too narrow for modern standards and the wider seats would need to jut back into the aisle behind to support the extra buttressing needed to keep them in place. Plus, the armrests would take away space in the opposite direction. This is the...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

What do you mean “at this point?” I started this way. I’m tired of Syracuse fans using the same talking points over and over and over and over again. The “gotta hammer the NE” trope is tired and doesn’t match reality, but a bunch of loud people who sat in freezing weather at Archbald think it’s...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

Syracuse's region is Upstate NY, and the HS football in Upstate NY produces few prospects. Syracuse has long been at a disadvantage because of it. You can delude yourself all you want that Syracuse's "backyard" is New Jersey or Philadelphia or Connecticut, when only wealthy kids from wealthy...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

Where have I said "we shouldn't be recruiting there?" Please, point to the exact passage. My whole point is that you seem to think "recruiting better in NYC and NJ will magically make the team better." It's recruiting better that will improve the team. Full stop. The rest is just some weird...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

So, first of all, I was pointing out in my post that Michigan, Notre Dame, and Penn State don't recruit NY and NJ nearly as much as the poster implying. Second of all, don't put words in my mouth. I've made it very clear what I'm arguing, and if this is your takeaway, that's on you.

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

What do you consider "our backyard?" Upstate NY? There have been 18 P4 commits out of the whole state above Rockland and Westchester between 2019 - 2024. That's like 3 commits a year - not something you can rely on, even if you get them all. NYC? Rutgers is 40 miles away and Penn State...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

The point of my objection is that I think the "if we recruit better in NY and NJ, we'll win" mindset is outdated at best and misguided at worst. There's lots of evidence to suggest that "if we recruit better in NY and NJ, we'll win" is not correct! I am genuinely puzzled by the "getting better...

Your argument is "it worked under Pasqualoni, so therefore it will work again"? So much has changed since then. Demographic shifts, the rise of 7-on-7, exposure factories like IMG, HUDL, internet recruiting databases / ranking sites, and more teams in Cuse's so-called "backyard." The little...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

I'm realizing the argument you're trying to make is "winning consistently has to start close to home." I'm going to look into the numbers on that because I don't know if it's that simple. (Look at the Schiano Rutgers redux, for example.)

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

My argument is not "it doesn't matter if we don't recruit locally." And it is definitely not "we shouldn't recruit locally." My argument is "Cuse's lack of success over the last 20 year is not correlated to where the players are recruited from." There's a big difference.

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

If you NEED to have parents within driving distance, then how are all of the examples I've posted in this thread of players going to schools not within driving distance of home also true? Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

I'm not questioning the recruiting philosophy of the staff. And I very much understand there's a million factors that go into this. I'm specifically calling out the crowd on here who think there's a correlation between winning and where the players are recruited from.
  28. LeMoyneCuse

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

This is a truism, but the key to getting the best players you can (and those who fit your scheme) is recruiting well. But what you're talking about, the Babers cast-a-net approach vs. the Brown relationships approach, are just that - approaches. And thus far, it seems Brown and Co are doing...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

The prevailing argument of the board seems to be "We need to recruit in the Northeast." Which, we do. And we always have. But there seems to be this continuous narrative that recruiting the Northeast harder will make Cuse a winner again. When asked for explanation, the reasons why Syracuse...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

The key is to get the best players. Where they come from is immaterial. Proximity to home is just a recruiting angle.
  31. LeMoyneCuse

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

And there-in lies my point. That's a false correlation. You can win with talent from anywhere and everywhere. And you can get talent in numerous ways. Sure, some of Cuse's issues have been talent related. But you can't specifically connect losing records with where players went to high school...

Just an example - The 2024 Top 50 players in NJ are going to 29 different FBS or FCS schools. So let's stop with this belief that only certain states are picked over - recruiting is a national game. Also, of the Top 50 from NJ, at least 18 are going to schools at the edge of or outside that 6...

  35. LeMoyneCuse

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

Why though? People say this like it's carved in stone. I think it's great that Coach Fran is focusing on the NE - that seems to be something Wildhack is targeting, and Brown is off to one heck of a start. But "Cuse has to recruit successfully close to home to be successful" in and of itself...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

This isn't a Syracuse-specific argument, but Boise State has feasted for decades on under-recruited talent out of California, West Virginia pre-Big XII was built around studs out of Florida, Washington St under Leach was all guys out of California and Florida, Utah and BYU use religious connects...

    Identity vs Due Diligence: Northeast

No college coach is going to take the Atletico Bilboa approach of limiting their roster to a specific regionality just for the sake of identity. It's a relationships game - Brown has them in the general region and is working them. Marrone did the same thing (via Anselmo). It's also a...
