14 better paid coaches than JB

Shows you the kind of a man JB is. He easily could ask for triple that amount if he were a greedy .

7.5 million for Pitino? Yeesh.

7.5 million is overboard in my opinion. If I was structuring the contract I may add some monetary incentives to reach close to 7.5 million if certain goals are reached like top 10 recruiting classes, trips to final fours, top 3 finish in conference, etc. Pitino got the better end of the deal 100%. I dont think upstaters would take to kindly to the idea of Boeheim making 5+ million dollars a year even given his success. Thats just way more then any reasonable human needs to live an elite live in the Syracuse area.

the cost of living in Louisville is at least 7.5 times more than Syracuse! ;)

I haven't looked at this in a while, but perhaps the U is divvying up what's not being spent on JB and distributing it to others--such as a head-coach-in-waiting? Does anybody know how much the rest of the coaching staff makes?

Or maybe the extra dough just goes to keeping TGD in his perpetual sartorial splendor.

this brings to mind 1 thing...

NOT A DIME BACK

So Sean Miller and Rick Barnes make about twice what Boeheim does?

I occasionally criticize some of Boeheim's coaching (and administrative) decisions, but I know a bargain when I see one. We're fortunate to have him, and he's a steal compared to everyone else on that list.

also, this isnt a comprehensive list...

i am positive huggins makes more. I am sure Beilein does, gottfried does, few does, etc...

Turgeon at Maryland gets 2.5x Boeheim's salary and their athletic dept is broke!!

Agreed. He knows that extra money he is entitled to (at least compared to many of the undistinguished people on this list) would come at the expense of the budgets for football and other sports at SU. This is one of the benefits of having an alum as coach who truly loves his school.

How in the hell did Rick Pitino make 1.4 million in non-university pay? Very sketchy!! Perhaps he moonlights as a lobbyist for Fannie Mae.

They have better TV deals, I am sure. Also maybe a bigger shoe deal.

Yeah, but why would Pitino see any benefits form TV rights or shoe contracts. Seems to me like that money would go to the University. While some of that money might filter down to Pitino, the article explicitly stated 1.4 mill in "non-university" money. I'm thinking that maybe he wrote a book and/or makes money off doing public appearances.

the tv deals and shoe deals go into coaches contracts - it is an easier way to get high paying deals through the BOT or states.

it makes sense in a lot of deals, but not 1 that is paying 6.1 million in salary from the public university.

How ironic in a state, which I believe has the lowest income per capita, compensates their basketball coaches such a ludicrous amount of coin. Oh Lord

If JB wanted Pitino or Donovan money he could have had it...but not at SU. He would have to go someplace else. And he never and still doesn't want to go anyplace else. So he'll have to be happy here for less. And he is...thankfully.

I bet that some of the money that makes Mike Hopkins such a high paid assistant - and keeps him waiting for his opportunity at his alma mater - would otherwise be going to JB

Not so sure about the shoe deal. I'd be curious what our Nike deal fetches compared to their Adidas deal (even if it was the number for the entire athletic program)

Forbes once ran an article ranking college football coaches according to who delivers the most bang for the buck. They should do one for bball. No one will ever come close to JB for bang for the buck.

How many of the higher paid coaches are migrant workers that have been at 3 or more schools, always looking for the highest bidder and leaving the players they recruited in the middle of the night for more bucks? On the other hand, maybe they are more like hookers. Anyway, JB probably has all the money he needs and can sleep at night knowing he has principles and a court named after him.

Aside from Duke (a special case), all the rest are large state universities. Enough said. Heck, my taxpayer dollars help pay Jim Calhoun's salary.

PS... Private universities have to fill out an IRS form listing the salaries of their five highest paid employees. Both JB and K are among the five highest paid at their schools, so their salaries have to be reported accurately (contrary to what the article said).
