our struggles to get scores when we get deep

first is the play after the Virg fumble. Call came at a perfect time execution was great , blocking was great. Gasden has the safety the db and the LB all watching him
I have to wonder when they practice what Pena was told about who to throw to. Tucker was never open and while Shrader might not score there would really only be 1 guy to beat as Tucker probably runs his guy out of the play.

the 2nd of the 2nd quarter..

UV is playing soft basically almost 7 across so passing underneath is going to be hard and they did this a ton in the Red zone. We ran a motion/stack type play

Again Shrader who has missed this type or action 2-3 times this year Misses the correct read again..

UV all confused as Pena comes in and Tucker starts outside and cuts back under.. 2 guys following him. The saftey watching cooper going shallow underneath.
At this point the read has to be Pena in the Flat.. Again on DB has an shot at all at getting to him and while Tucker might be open with the design of the D there is 2-3 guys who might be in the way

Yeah, they've been doing that funky route where Tucker kinda slants outside and then cuts back in. Have they actually hit on that play at all? Seems like a complicated route that pulls Tucker back into the middle of the field and more potential tacklers, and it's really noticeable when the pass is incomplete. Maybe he's been catching passes out of it though and it's harder to notice?

I’m not sure how Garrett missed that, he was looking at Peña and Tuck the whole time.

Doesn’t look like Shredder has much room to step into a pass there

Yeah, he's got the DL staring him in the face, so while Pena is actually wide open, maybe he actually couldn't see him thru the wall of humanity directly in front of him, and/or was worried the pass would be batted down?

All that said, he coulda just lofted a duck up there, since Trebor was wiiiiide open and all alone.

I think he’s just locked on to Tucker. Doubt he even saw Pena

Hopefully with Wagner and the bye week will get Shrader some time to look at film and identify the correction in real-time. Goes for a lot of execution.

He should be winding up to throw to Pena in the 2nd frame. More like a 15-20 yard throw accounting for the distance across the hashes and Penas depth to the sideline when the ball gets there. You don't want to have to throw a bb so the ball has to come out early before the safety flips to cross the hash. Just way too tentative.

In theory, yes. Maybe Pena has trouble picking up a ball already in the air when he turns his head? Some guys are better at it than others. I would hope it's something they've done over and over in practice so Pena would know exactly where to look coming out of his break.

There were 5 guys on D on the middle of the field.. I would think the play design has to be such that the read is middle out and if the D does X the throw is out, because you cant read out and then back in without opening up the INT on a player you dont see move towards Tucker.
