WDI Top 25

3. Syracuse

It’s Kayla Treanor’s (60G, 31A) last year in Upstate New York, as the dominant attacker and two-time Tewaaraton finalist leads a team that captured an ACC crown last year despite having to rebuild the bulk of its starting lineup from 2014. While the Orange will have to find an answer on the draw with the departure of Kailah Kempney (186DC), they return All-American talent end to end and should be a Final Four contender yet again in 2016.

Player of the Year Watch

Kayla Treanor, A, Sr., Syracuse

While many great attackers have come before Treanor (60G, 31A, 31GB, 22DC, 16CT) at Syracuse, she might just be the best of them all – and that’s a tall task considering those names include former Tewaaraton finalists Katie Rowan (2008), Michelle Tumolo (2013) and Alyssa Murray (2013 & 2014). A matchup nightmare for every team she faces, the two-time Tewaaraton finalist dazzles with her ability to use her right and left hand interchangeably around the crease and scores from virtually no angle time and time again. Arguably the most exciting player the college game has seen in years, she’s a highlight reel attacker with a knack for showing up in the clutch. In 2015, Syracuse had 11 one-goal games – just five of them wins. In that stretch, Treanor had five game-winning goals.

Conference Outlooks

ACC

The most powerful league in women’s lacrosse since its expansion from six to eight teams in 2014 has put seven teams in the last two NCAA Tournaments and six of the last eight semifinalists. The conference has put a team in the NCAA title game six of the last years, including three NCAA championships. UNC, Syracuse, Duke, Boston College and Virginia all were host sites last year. The ACC was 65-21 against non-ACC opponents in 2015.

Predicted Champion: North Carolina

Predicted Player of the Year: Kayla Treanor, Syracuse

NCAA Bid Projection: 7

With the dominating strength of the conference, any team that finishes with an overall winning record should be in the NCAA Tournament; that has been the case the previous three years.

Rookie Watch

Nicole Levy, A, Syracuse

Syracuse returns two first-team All-Americans in 2016 in Halle Majorana and Kayla Treanor, but coach Gary Gait’s team might boast three by season’s end if Levy has her way. Much like Treanor, the Long Island native dazzles around the crease and possesses electrifying stickwork. Her arrival in Upstate New York makes the Orange’s attack the offense to watch this spring.
