Report: Memphis may fire Tubby, bring in Penny

Memphis is considering firing head coach Tubby Smith and replacing him with Penny Hardaway, according to a report Tuesday by CBSSports.com.

Hardaway would target Larry Brown as an assistant coach were he to replace Smith, according to the report.

Hardaway, who played for the Tigers from 1991 to '93 before becoming a four-time NBA All-Star, currently coaches East High School (Memphis, Tenn.) and runs the Team Penny AAU program on the Nike EYBL circuit. He coaches ESPN 60 No. 1 junior James Wiseman at East, as well as five-star junior Chandler Lawson (No. 26). Five-star junior D.J. Jeffries (No. 17) also plays for Team Penny.

As it stands, Memphis is not considered a threat to land any of those three prospects, which is one of the reasons the Tigers are considering a change...

Tubby to WhoCONN?
So, Memphis might hire Larry Brown.

I always find this interesting why certain coaches don't succeed. It would seem that Reggie has all it takes to be a successful coach. He certainly knows the game.

Is his lack of success an inability to communicate, to organize, to effectively delegate?
Is it simply an inability to recruit?

prob something to do with his kid

Tubby will likely never get another P6 job again.

Bring in Penny. Memphis has nothing to lose at this point. They can't keep top talent home anymore. If you want to compete in the long-term, have him come on. It may fail, but he's done exceptionally well on the high school and AAU level, plus he's an alumnus of the program.

so you agree that Tubby should go to WhoCONN

I don't believe that will happen. He had medical issues when he left OSU and was very happy to be away after he left.
But, you never know what being away from a job you love can do.
