The 2nd round matchup between Tufts and St John Fisher is ridiculous. They’re 2 of the 3 or 4 best teams in the whole field.

Union doesn’t even make the field. They’re clearly one of the top teams in D3, played RIT twice within two goals and that’s with a million practices canceled because of covid.

Only 2 at-large bids were given this year with a smaller tournament field. Union's loss to Ithaca probably eliminated them from contention for that.

St. John Fisher was 11-3 with losses to RIT (x2) and St. Lawrence. They bid to be a host site and were selected, meaning they'd be in the "North" region. The truth is that the fact that there aren't really seeds and it's done by geography and $$$ forced them to be in either RIT or Tufts pod. The committee didn't pair them up with the #1 overall seed (RIT). F&M was also a host site, so SJF and F&M obviously couldn't be in the same pod. And it wouldn't make sense to have York travel to Rochester instead of the half hour drive to F&M (the distance from Tufts to both sites is almost identical). The only alternative would have been to have them matched up with a RIT team that would be getting a bye and sending Tufts to Stockton. This actually would have likely saved the NCAA money, meaning the committee felt SJF deserved better than facing the #1 seed in the 2nd round coming off a bye.

Agree on the Ithaca loss but didn't Union beat st Lawrence?

The two at-large bids went to #9 CNU and #12 Stevenson. Union being at #13 means that they were probably in the discussion. But, Union finished the year 5-3 with only 1 ranked win (the #10 SLU win you mentioned). Otherwise, they have two losses to #1 RIT and a loss to an unranked Ithaca team. Not to mention that they also didn't make their conference championship game. Stevenson finished the year 8-1 with their only loss being against #6 York in the conference championship. They have 2 ranked wins (#6 York and #19 Stevens). They are also a host site for the tournament which means if it was close, they were getting in. CNU did have 5 losses at 11-5, but they came to #2 Salisbury (x3), #4 Lynchburg, and #16 Colorado College. On the flip side, they had wins over #4 Lynchburg, #17 Hampden-Sydney and a W&L team that was just outside the top 20.

If it really came down to it, I actually believe the spot might have went to St. Lawrence before Union. SLU had an 8-3 record, a win over #8 St. John Fisher, only losses were to #1 RIT (x2) and #13 Union and they won their conference semifinal. I think Union is a very good team, but the number of at-large teams shrinking combined with the Ithaca loss that forced them to play RIT again in the semifinal, knocked them out.

which is a shame depending on the part of the country they reside in. Union plays 8 games, cnu plays 16.

Salisbury might put up 40 on Illinois Wes. That should be a really fun game.

York is really interesting to me. I'll be blunt - not a good school academically; not a nice town; campus is meh; not in lacrosse hotbed (though adjacent to Baltimore and SE PA); private so not inexpensive. But they win, a lot. They've surpassed their Centennial neighbors. I think their coach, Childs, is really good, and wonder if he will get a bigger job some time soon.

RIT 19, Colorado Col 13

Tufts 17, York 7

Christopher Newport 12, Lynchburg 11 (OT)

Salisbury 30, Illinois Weslyan 5

That guy knows his stuff. Very insightful.
CNU did get handled twice by the gulls, but it was dog eat dog last time. and the captains just took the 2nd of 3 from a good lynchburg team. who of course got to SU early.
the gulls have more depth on a back to back on a hot day. but cnu up early. we'll see.

rit tufts was a fun game to watch.. Tufts went up four and RIT went on a big run before the half and into the 3rd to go up 5 and held on.
