Although unusual - typically during Dino’s era, they’ve done rotating captains for the first few games, then the team votes and elects the permanent captains for the remainder of the season.

Maybe this is the influence of Anae & Beck on Dino’s ways of doing things?

If so, I’ll consider that a huge positive.

Mikel Jones is probably a captain on the defensive side.

And maybe Aaron Bolinsky for special teams?
 
If I'm picking - Bergeron, Mikel & Andre are my 3 choices. This assumes the coaches take 1 from O, D & special teams.

Szmyt has done the following the last 4 years:

30-34 (Groza award)
17-20
9-11
9-14 (all but 1 miss beyond 40, including 1 50+ yarder)

By all accounts he's a good kid, good teammate and well respected. I'm not NOT giving him the "C" because he missed 5 FG's last year. I was just as frustrated as everyone else with some of his misses last year, but the overreaction by some people is incredible.

Yes it was sarcasm, but your post is good for the people that feel the need to be “angry” at Andre.

According to Bees they had some weird everyone was a special teams coach last year set up. As we all saw it was a hot mess. Thank goodness JW put his foot down and demanded Dino hire a special teams coach.

It's not just according to Bees. It's been mentioned in several stories that Dino said it was by committee with a different coach handling each unit. I agree it wasn't a great idea though.

A question for those who might know. I rewatched the spring game yesterday (ACCN) and saw every kick off Andre did was fielded between the goal and 10 yd line. Is that preferred spot or would it be better if he reached the end zone to cause a fair catch?

Also our punting needs help based on the spring game.

I want our place kicker kicking it at least 5 yards past the goal line on every kickoff.

We have rarely had a kicker who consistently is able to get the kickoffs to the goal line. This is one of those things that can cost a team a win or two every season.

Hopefully we find one some day.

I'd prefer 5 yards ahead of the goal line with hang time. If you trust your coverage team there's much to be gained (field position and turnovers) rather than giving free pass to the 25.

Hope we're kicking off a lot this season regardless.

I don't trust my coverage team and I have a lot of respect for the ACC KO return teams. There is some serious speed out there.

I wouldn't be so adamant about this if our placekickers were able to kick it to the 5 and consistently get good hang time. That hasn't happened in a long time.

How many times did we kick our kickoff out of bounds last year? I don't have this but I suspect it was 3 or 4 times. Just awful to give the ball to your opponent this way.

We really need to get better in this area. I would not have a problem giving a scholarship out to someone who was great at this. Hopefully also great at punting and/or kicking field goals.

I expect Coach Liggy will help address our coverage team woes. Sure hope so anyway.

Certainly higher risk, higher reward strategy but I feel like we have to win special teams to win games Vs play for a draw in that facet. Also looking at the numbers or DBs and WRs on roster feel like we can have an extremely athletic special teams unit that covers ground quickly

he went from 88% and the Groza to

85%
82%
64%

was expecting him to be gone.

there was some game changing, momentum killing missed FGs in there. i think some non tries because of no confidence too.

drive killers that often turned right into 7 for the enemy.

a 10 point swing.

short leash, whos the backup??
