Comments:
I think the defenses Syracuse will face, especially OOC, were more vulnerable to the run last season. All things being equal, we might need to rely on our rushing game more in 2019. When we do run, we certainly will not rely on the QB to get the job done very much.

With Eric gone, how will teams defend Syracuse? Teams might respect TD more than ED. Might be less man coverage, less playing with 8 men in the box.

No question Tommy is going to see a lot of disguised coverages, funky blitzes and craziness. I think the biggest weakness of the offense during the Babers era has been pass blocking. ED helped hide that weakness by sometimes saving a sure sack with his legs, strength and ability to throw on the run.

Can TD handle pass blocking problems?

Some say Eric sometimes waited too long to get rid of the ball, which helped make the pass blocking look bad. That might be true but some of that was because we had a bunch of undersized WRs who might have had problems getting open right away. Can the WRs do a better job beating press coverage? Losing Custis will hurt here. Can Jackson step up and get open consistently? Will someone else step up here?

Regarding the picks here, I had a hart time picking someone in several categories. Riley led the team in receptions last year and you would think he should be a lock to lead the team here again. But Jackson was not on the team last year and appears to have the skills to be a complete WR. I know DeVito is tight with him, the two are said to have a special chemistry and that has to mean something. Plus last year Riley was pretty much our only reliable slot option. I think we have more guys we can go to here this season.

That said, I think the reception totals for Riley and Jackson will be very close.

For yards, I think Jackson is going to get more YPC than Riley and that will drive him to the win here. Jackson has exceptional agility and is going to get a lot of yards after he makes catches. Don’t think this one is going to be really close.

I see a similar very close contest for rushing yards and rushing TDs. Moe Neal keeps getting bigger and better each year and I think that trend continues. Abdul Adams is the real deal though. He has size, speed and experience. I think both might get over 1000 yards but Dino is loyal to his seniors and I think that gives Moe a slight edge here.

On defense, Coleman is just a hair less effective than Alton but might benefit from a double team focus on Robinson. Should be very close between those two for the sacks. Robinson is really good at TFL and should win that one pretty easily.

The tackles competition should be top notch. The LBs have dominated here but I picked Foster. This was partly because Foster is really good, and partly because I think Dino is going to play more LBs this season, distributing the tackles among them a bit more. Keep an eye on Mikel Jones, who has apparently won the starting job at the 3rd LB spot (we generally use a nickel more but the 3rd LB still gets a lot of PT).

What a difference a year makes, i see pessimism in 3 and 4 loss predictions this year where I saw rationality in 4-6 win predictions last year.

The “jump” is sustained respectability and bowl wins. Lets hope we get another step closer in 2019!
