Syracuse faces a big must win game, on short rest this week against old rivals/nemesis Albany. There are two major storylines here, 1) the fact that Albany dismissed its best player not even a week ago and 2) all eyes will be on the Syracuse face-off position which has fallen apart these two weeks. I agree with Quint in that its probably good for the Orange to have a Thursday game, and try and get the bad feelings from the Notre Dame beatdown out of their systems. It sounds like Woody has watched a good amount of Albany games this year, hoping he will chime on on this thread.
I think some posters on this board have been a bit dismissive of the Great Danes (even before Tehoka was dismissed from the team), but I think they could certainly give SU a run for their money this week. Especially since the Orange seem to be in a bit of a fragile mindset. Jakob Patterson leads the team in scoring with 28 points on the season, most of them coming on assists with 20. The Albany website seems a little funky, and I am not exactly sure who they replaced Tehoka with on attack, but both Graydon Hogg and Kyle Casey have 19 points. Albany appears to have decent depth of scoring with their top six all having double digit point totals. Albany plays a unique style of lacrosse, they push the tempo and don't mind having their defensive midfielders shooting. They don't have some of the talent as years past, but SU still needs to be wary as they can attack from all sides of the field. I imagine Dami and Aviles will be picked on plenty in this game. Mitch Wykoff has struggled the last two games against high profile attackmen, he'll have to play much better against Patterson in order for the Orange to succeed.
And now the hot-button issue for the Orange. Albany's main FOGO Regan Endres comes in at just over 50%. In normal times, that would be a good indicator for Syracuse. However, as has been much discussed, Jakob Phaup, the owner of the best FO percentage in the ACC last year, has struggled mightily in the last two games, going just 2-16 and both of his wins came on violations. Desko ripped off the redshirt for freshman Jack Savage and used him exclusively in the second half of the Notre Dame game. He did better than Phaup or Danny Varello, but went just 6-17. So the big question is does Desko try and rehabilitate Phaup, or does he try and get Savage ready for an end of season run? I've discussed it before but the issue with Phaup is that he can dominate lesser opponents, but when he does not have a good game, he really struggles. Its not that he's been losing face-offs recently, its that he's been losing them so cleanly. Even in 2019, Phaup would struggle against upper tier FOGOs, so I'm not sure all his struggles this season can be blamed on the new rules. He could certainly have a bounce back game against Albany, but might face the same struggles against UNC a week later. This is a must win game for the Orange, but they also need to think about the rest of the season as well.
Syracuse has shown they can score this year when they are getting the ball. Albany's goalie Liam Donnelly has an impressive 56% save percentage, but was chased from the Stony Brook game after allowing six goals on only one save. The Syracuse offense does have some issues right now, but hard to fault them too much when they aren't seeing the ball. The first midfield has not been as strong as they were last year, Trimboli has half as many points in two extra games, which stands out. Dordevic needs to make better decisions and Curry needs to show an ability to attack and beat a long pole. The attack has played well but I'd still like to see Owen Hiltz get more touches, he seems to go long stretches without getting a touch, and I think he is much more than just a crease finisher. I also am confused as to why Griffin Cook is seeing so much playing time. one assist in seven games is just not going to cut it. SU has a bevy of midfielders, I have to imagine one of them could be more productive. I think he's gotten more than enough chances at this point.
This is a big game for the Orange, a loss would put them up against a wall. With a win they wouldn't really silence the doubters but a win needs to happen. It seems like this would be a good matchup to re-work some things, with the following three games all against ACC foes, but a short week isn't great for implementing new things. This has been a rollercoaster of a season, and at this point nothing would really surprise me in terms of outcome for this game. Think Syracuse should win by a couple of goals, but if face-offs continue to be an issue and the defense lets up more big runs, this game could get away from the Orange. They really need to batten down the hatches.
