Sources: Amherst Has Suspended Spring Sports Due to Concerns Over COVID-19

he Amherst men’s and women’s lacrosse team will be included in a college-wide decision to suspend spring sports beginning Wednesday, multiple sources have told Inside Lacrosse.

Members of the men’s team met last night and were informed of the decision, which was later communicated to alumni, as well.

The Mammoths’ men’s team will play Endicott today as scheduled. Coming off of a run to the DIII NCAA championship last season, Amherst was ranked No. 2 in the USILA’s preseason poll and is off to a 2-1 start this season, having fallen to Tufts on Saturday.

The women’s is off to a 3-1 start this season and were ranked No. 9 prior to falling to Tufts on Saturday. The Mammoths went 14-6 last year, losing by a goal to Salisbury in the NCAA Tournament Regional Final.

The college has suspended classes beginning on Thursday and will transition to an online learning model beginning next Monday.

A source close to the program said there is a “very outside chance” that the season could be resumed if the situation surrounding the pandemic’s spread locally, regionally and nationally were to improve.

While other colleges and universities have taken steps to reduce the need or volume of classroom attendance and crowds at athletic contests, it appears Amherst is the first athletic department to suspend its lacrosse teams’ seasons.
