Another Game...Another Lesson About This Team

On a day when everyone else is out of it offensively...it's Trevor Cooney to the rescue with a career game.

Special teams do special things.

And this was a big time special...the kind that can get a player on NBA radar.

This game has to put opposing coaches undies in a bundle. Cooney's game here, following up his very good game against Duke, puts a completely different dynamic on preparing for us. It's like our already formidable military just introduced the first jet plane, or the atom bomb.

He's making some tough shots too coming around those curls and screens almost full speed. His elevation is pretty impressive on those, too. I liked how Bilas was commending his form. The game is really slowing down for him.

"Ten toes pointed at the rim."

Bilas is so good.

The whole 10 toes pointing toward the basket is in my head now. I actually played this morning and thought about that as I was warming up. Oddly enough, it works.

Couldn't agree more about this team being special. I also have been thinking we don't even know what Trevor Cooney's ceiling is before his college career is over. One post bugged me the other day when it said something to the effect of "In 10 years we'll be saying wow, we really had Fair, Christmas, Ennis, and Grant on the same team". Throw Cooney on the list and I would have loved the post. So many weapons capable of going off on any night.

I agree that we do not yet know Trevor's ceiling as a collegian, but that is entirely different than saying he is an NBA prospect. There have been many great collegians who did not even get a whiff of the NBA - ask Gerry. Yes, even if the others become great pros and Trevor doesn't, he will still be long remembered as a huge part of this team, especially if this team can get to the FF or beyond.

At this stage of his career, I do not see Trevor as an NBA prospect for the following reasons:

1. By NBA standards he has below average athleticism.

2. While he is gradually expanding his game for pullups and drives, at this point he is still mostly a long range gunner and not multi-dimensional enough in his game for the next level.

3. He lacks size for an NBA 2G.

4. He has a well below average handle for the next level.

Now, that is the way I see it today. I fully expect Trevor to be a better, more polished player in two years, and maybe he can find a spot at the next level by improving my points 2 & 4. Unfortunately, not much he can do about points 1 & 3.

I agree with a lot said here, but I actually think Trevor is extremely athletic.

Well, JJ Redick has found a home.

Who cares about Trevor's ceiling as an NBA prospect?

The guy has the opportunity to be a fantastic college player. Whether he plays in the NBA has zero bearing on that.

Let that last sentence sink in for a moment. The board's preoccupation with the NBA is baffling at times.

For the record, I think Cooney is going to be a helluva player for us throughout the rest of his career. Kid is only a sophomore, and while he's going through normal inconsistency that comes with being inexperienced, he's showing flashes of being able to take a few dribbles for jump shots inside the arc, driving to the hole, etc. He's strong and way more athletic than many of our own fans seem to recognize. He's already a pretty good defender and will only get better with experience across the board. Kid is going to be the most feared player in college basketball in another year or two--just watch. Not because he's a top NBA candidate, but because he's a good college player. A very good college player. And in another year or two, and with a bit more consistency, he might be considered a great one.

Only #3 will make it hard for him to make the NBA.

Those that want to discuss it?

Agreed...and I'm a huge NBA fan and don't mind talking bout our guys pre or post season.

I really don't understand discussing during season. ENJOY THE FN GAMES. Enough of the "will he or won't he leave" threads. It's insanity.

I think you undersell him as an athlete. Second best vertical on the team.

JJ Redick's sophomore year numbers at Duke (listed 6-4, 190):
15.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.7 apg, 0.7 spg, 42.3% FG, 39.5% 3PFG, 95.3% FT

Trevor Cooney's sophomore year numbers at Syracuse (listed 6-4, 195):
14.1 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.4 apg., 2.2 spg, 46.1% FG, 43.6% 3PFG, 87.2% FT.

Numbers are pretty comparable, IMO.

Remember Redick was National Player of the Year as a junior and played all four seasons at Duke, working his way into lottery pick territory. He has created a niche for himself in the NBA. I think Redick has a bit more range (rarely see Cooney firing from 25 feet - yet), but I also think Cooney has a bit more athleticism.

Not saying Cooney is a lottery pick - but he's got a chance to be an NBA guy if he keeps getting better over the next two years.

NBA or not, who cares at this point. Makes for good banter sure, but I'm just enjoying what Trevor can give us night in and night out. In this game, he carried the others, in other games they've carried him. Good teamwork I'd say.
