Check out this story about what's happening at Auburn:

SOURCE: Bryan Harsin is telling players that want to redshirt that they must enter the transfer portal or quit the team - Sports Illustrated Auburn Tigers News, Analysis and More

So. We have a coach on the hottest of the hot seats demanding that players burn their freshman redshirts unless they have a medical excuse, and kicking them off the team if they don't comply. Leading to the following:

Of Auburn's 18 signees in the 2021 recruiting class, nine have already left the program, including five of the top ten. Some transferred in the 2021 offseason, with Dematrius Davis (Alabama State), Hal Presley (Baylor), Lee Hunter (UCF), Ian Matthews (Missouri), Ro Torrence (Arizona State), and Kamal Hadden (Tennessee) all finding new homes for the 2022 season. Defensive lineman Marquis Robinson entered the transfer portal in January of 2022, only to withdraw in April and remain with the Tigers. Cornerback AD Diamond, a freshman from Mobile, has not officially made an announcement but is not currently listed on Auburn's online roster as of Tuesday night.

Unintended consequences. Won't be the last NIL mega-meltdown we see.

Maybe I missed it but I didn’t see NIL mentioned?

This has nothing to do with NIL and everything to do with Brian Harsin being the most hated man in Auburn, AL.

Also, this is a good time to point out that NIL deals are independent of the coach.

I thought this was going to be about the A&M freshmen smoking weed in the locker room before their game at South Carolina.

NIL helps us with football I feel like even if we can't compete in the initial market, the portal helps us.

That is likely what the original poster is alluding to. These players might have NIL deals which come with a "you will redshirt" clause because we don't like the coach.

That's a VERY strong assumption that doesn't make a lot of sense.

Yup. It’s a ringing endorsement for firing a coach earlier.
The players have NIL. The donors now have leverage which they might be using to remove the coach. That is a meltdown for sure.

Auburn is a hot mess right now. A coach that is clearly in the hot seat, and a fanbase/boosters that are trying to pretend he is not so that they don't give off an impression to the next coach that the fanbase has unreasonable expectations

They fabricated a story about Harsin having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member just to try and get him fired last off season. I think the next coach is well aware of what they signing up for already.

If the players have NIL money for services that are not yet rendered (scheduled appearances, filmed items that haven't aired, etc.), I'd guess they have to return that if they're forced to leave the team. Which could put them in a pickle if they've already spent it.

He's gone as of weeks ago. They fired the AD first.

Auburn is a mess and job #1 for the next AD and HC will be to wrangle the boosters in a way that actually helps the program.
