No, it's not a sequel to "Game of Thrones". It's just that, seeing Southern California become a national championship contender again caused me to remember when Pete Carroll was coaching there and they were the raining dynasty of college football, or at least the team to beat. From 2002-2008, they went 82-9. They won the 2004 national championship by crushing Oklahoma 55-19. They were cheated out of a title the previous year when they were #1 in both polls and yet were not invited to the BC title game. And they were undefeated and averaging 50 points a game in 2005 when they lost what may have been the best college football game ever played for the 2005 title to Vince Young and Texas. It broke a 34 game winning streak. Their 2004 champs had TWO Heisman trophy winners in their backfield and outscored their opposition by 327 points. I've often wondered how Carroll's USC teams might have done against Nick Saban's Alabama teams.

Saban's teams have been on top for a longer period: from 2008 to the present, 'Bama has been 186-21, winning the national title in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2020. They had a 26 game winning streak from 2015-2016. The Alabama national champion that outscored their opposition by the biggest margin was the 2012 team that crushed Notre Dame for the title, 42-14: 542-153 (389 points).

That made me think the heyday of "The U", when the University of Miami won 4 national titles from 1983-91 and then another a decade later. The canes went 143-25 from 1983-96 with titles in 1983, 1987, 1989 and 1991 and a 29 game winning streak from 1990-1992. But they had a 34 game winning streak from 2000-2002. And the biggest margin of victory for any of their national champions is from their 2001 team that out-scored the opposition 512-177, (+395) and crushed Nebraska 37-14 for the national championship.
Ah, Nebraska. Was there ever a more impressive team than the Husker bunch that rolled through the Florida Gaters like an agricultural combine in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl 62-24? That team outscored their foes 638-174 (+464). They were one of three Tom Osborne national champions of the 1990's, ('94, '95 and '97) and won 26 games in a row from 1994-96. in 25 years, Tom Osborne was 255–49–3 but in his last five years, (1993-1997), he was 60-3!
Suppose the 1995 Nebraska team, the 2001 Miami team, the 2004 USC team and the 2012 Alabama team play a tournament - or maybe a round-robin. Who wins?
