it's a dumb contrarian move for fans to ignore refereeing

big east refs suck. they really do. even when they do blow the whistle, it's kills them to do it. i swear i can hear the whistle saying "oh alright, ok fine..." 5 seconds after the foul.

we have enough depth to handle more whistles than most teams, scoop isn't quick enough to deal with guards who can get away with hand checking

i'm hoping that refs who aren't wastes of sperm can help our offense look better.

If I dont see Karl Hess for the next 10 years I will be a happy man.

There really is no such thing as Big East refs. So we all need to just stop with the whining about the referees.

Look at the following - http://statsheet.com/mcb/conferences/big-east/referees

Jim Burr, the man we all love to hate, worked 25 Big East games out of a total of 64 total for the season.

And don't worry about Scoop being quick enough to deal with hand checks. The problem with Scoop is that he isn't quick enough to contest three point shots.

And to further illustrate my point, Hess only worked 19 BE games out of a total of 90. I'd be glad to discuss how overworked Hess is - he worked more games than any NBA player will actually play in this season.

they're not spread around the conferences equally

Not sure how you would do that though. These guys all live somewhere - they don't travel far from their houses like the NBA refs do. All I'm saying is that the problem with our bad refs isn't isolated. Jim Burr is a bad ref in every game he refs, regardless of league.

i'm not arguing that burr sucks less in other leagues.

he gets more big east games than other conferences and more syracuse games than other teams

and higgins and burr don't like to blow the whistle.

they're both bottom 15% in fouls called per game.

same goes for corbett, hess, o'connell, roberts. just use statsheet and sort by fouls

first you say there's no such thing as big east refs and that we should stop complaining. now it's, well what do you want, that's where he lives!

Seeing as we're playing in Pittsburgh and Boston (IF we get that far), there is probably a strong likelihood that we get some of the same bozos we've seen all along.

i don't remember the refs being as bad as usual overall this year. i don't care how they decide to call games as long as they are consistent. the worst i remember was the marquette game, where they called the first half one way and then came out in the second half and called the game completely differently. our guys didn't know what was or wasn't a foul and become very tentative defensively. i think the addition of the arc near the basket has significantly improved the charge/block calls, which was a major problem.

in a general sense i do think that the reffing philosophy needs to change in order to improve college basketball. the game is too physical overall, which hurts teams that actually have skilled players. the coaches recruit athletes first, because they know that with athletes they can play physical defense and have a chance to win. that is why we have all these games in the 50s, teams are basically filled with athletes that can't shoot. sometimes it is a relief to watch the nba, where guys actually make open shots.

I was just making sure that you knew that refs aren't confined to a conference like they were when guys like Higgins played.

I'm still not sure what you are bitching about with this line of complaining. It is on the coach and players to adjust to the refs on the floor. If Burr and Higgins are calling the game, they don't call more fouls on our team than the other. So, play tougher defense if that's what they are allowing.

I realize the Cuse travels well, but wouldn't you rather have the fans in the stands as opposed to traveling way out west?

Mike Roberts has been as bad, if not worse, than Higgins and Burr this season.

Sure. I was just pointing out that we will not necessarily be free of Big East refs.

Yes, this year they call more SU games than any other. Got me with that one. He lives in Brooklyn and we play a couple games in New York as I'm sure you've heard if you've followed the Cuse over the last few years.
who cares where he lives. my point is that in the tournament we might have better refs and it will likely help us. if it's because they live somewhere else, fine.

In reality, there are big east refs. Burr and Higgins are going to work the Big East tournament, not anyone elses. And there is no doubt to Millhouse's point. The Big East lets you play. It is a rough league. Much rougher than the ACC for example. With our depth, the more fouls, the better. Except at center. But even at center, we still have two guys with a lot of experience at this point.

All excellent points - especially about consistency. That's the worst possible ref situation. Two other things bother me with refs - calling differently based on the player (the Michael Jordan effect is what I call it) and calling the game different at the end of the game - ask NC State about that one.

How does that help us? If anything it would hurt us. Melo goes after every block and most of the time he gets more than just ball. He'd be sitting out after 5 minutes in each half.

Again - as a player you adjust to the refs that are there.

Maybe this year. But given JB's past use of his bench (many years we all wondered if he realized he had a bench), I'm still not sure how this helps the team.

if we were in foul trouble, jb would have to play the bench. Past history would have nothing to do with it.

Completely agree. But what that does is thrust a bunch of guys who have little to no real crunch time game experience into the most important moments of a game.

So again, I'm just not sure how this post about Big East refs changes the way SU plays any game.

There is no question that our team is more finesse and less physical. If the refs swallow the whistle and elect not to call the contact it will generally place this team at a disadvantage. To Millhouse's earlier point. Some year's we have to take the contact because we can't afford foul trouble of our own, this year with the deep bench we'd be better off if they clean up the contact by calling fouls as I believe this teams performs better in a finesse game and has the deep bench to withstand some foul trouble.

So refs that are in other conferences are better refs...just because?? Refs are refs. They are paid to make calls when they see them.

How was the ref with the over/back call against Scoop in the tourny last year?
