Bob Stoops steps down at OU

Interesting.

That's a top ten job opening, no?

As someone said, they filled it with Lincoln Riley but I would definitely call it top 10. It's very similar to an SEC culture/excitement for the football program in Oklahoma (unless you're an Oklahoma St fan)

Riley is considered an up and comer and "hot name"

He is, until he doesn't win, then they will want a bigger name, and they will realize how good they had it with stoops, and beg him to come back.

its been a done deal for awhile.. the question was now or after the season. guess he decided now.. some rumors of nfl job out there too

Except that they are likely going to be winning big in the near future with Mayfield still there and then Kyler Murray for 2 years after that.

Lincoln Riley is a very good OC. He brought in OU's new offense and was very successful. He was advised to NOT take several low and mid level HC jobs when the feelers started going out two years ago. I was willing to take the chance with him here at Syracuse.

If he picks a decent to very good DC and let's the guy do his job, he will be successful.

Big 12 is dying, Oklahoma while a good job might suffer in any transition they have in the coming years if they jump conferences. Stoops good to get out now, can interview with any school this fall that is looking for a coaching change and not be handcuffed by being in the middle of the season. And if he has eyes on the NFL there is a job in NY about to be open who will probably have the #1 overall pick, a boatload of cap space and he may be eyeballing that or another NFL job that may come open.

He isn't old so this may be just putting himself in the best position possible for next offseason while getting a year vacation to boot.

I don't know, even though they are in difference conferences now, I am not sure I could hire a HC who's first name is the same as the location of the campus of one of your long term rivals. :(

Isn't that true with any big program??

Riley is a hot up and coming coach. His name was thrown around here. Oklahoma is smart to tab him.

except by then he will be Head Coach of the Bears.

I don't see Stoops taking an Nfl job.
well, we will find out.

lot of smoke about the NFL for him, including the town of his shiny new home...Chicago.

and this sets him up nicely to be in play in 6 months...of course for both levels.

he will be 1 of the 1st January hires...

The word on Stoops was he was a family guy who didn't like the long hours of coaching, and would rather spend more time with his family, I don't see him taking an Nfl job, but money talks, so we shall see.

Chicago is not hiring him anytime soon. They've spent a lot of money, for them, to make the changes they now have in place. It doesn't matter if they are successful or not, the Bears will ride pace/fox for at least 2 more seasons, minimum.

I guess I've got to change my avatar I've had for almost a year...

im not up on my bears internal affairs, but it just 'fit' the simple dots I connected.

older coach, lousy record, shiny new QB...and the town of his home.

hes in the catbird seat now...
